Square Foot Garden 2009

I thought I would give you an update of my Square Foot Garden planted up with 34 different crops this year. The plot is mainly an old patio turned into three 3 × 6 foot beds each marked out into a foot square (hence the name!!) It is based on a principle by an American called Mel Bartholomew who originally designed it as a way of maximising the amount of produce without much room.
This year I have added Brocolli (calabrise and purple sprouting), Cabbage (savoy), Raspberries (permanent along the back row), Chantnay carrot (small little carrots) and normal carrots, leaf salad, Courgette (yellow ball!! couldnt resist the name!!), Beetoot, Mini Corn, Pak choi, Orange Baby tomato, Aubergine (baby patio), Pea and mangetout, Shallots, Peppers (Yellow and green patio), Totem tomato, Rocket, Salad leaves, Basil, Strawberries, Spring Onions, Normal green courgette, Stir-fry mix (oriental leaves), Cos Lettace, Dwarf beans (yellow and green) Radish, Chives, melon, cues (yellow and green ridge – called burpless!) and normal patio cherry tomatoes and of course my twin patio apple tree.
I will let you know how I get on but fingers crossed everything seems to be growing!

Maybe I will pack more into my raised beds next year, I was a little cautious with spacing due to my1st year.

Hi, it seems to work fine just make sure you add lots of fresh compost each time you harvest a square. There is no wastage as you are growing what you can eat. Good luck!

i have just found your old blog. i am so glad I came across it. I have decided to go the sq foot gardening way. So any help and advise you can tie me would be most welcome. I am a complete beginner. I haven't even made my 4 x 4 foot sq bed yet!

Never heard of this idea before. Sounds great for a small space. You've packed so much in. Look forward to hearing more.
