It’s just November and we’re feeling like we’ve had some inexplicable time shift.. Temps this a.m. were in the minus 20 C. range with windchill values of -28 C. We’ve hopped over autumn and gone directly into January. We’ve been watching the temp records for the last century falling to new highs or lows all year.. so this November 2018 is going into the books as the coldest in decades.
Happy to report that the deer who frequent my garden/yard are back now that hunting season is over. They’re pruning my shrubs and my little cedars are nubs now. If they’re this hungry at the very beginning of winter we’re going to have to help them later on.

Wow Lori! Temperatures that low don't bear thinking about. And only November. We don't get anywhere near as bad winters as we did years ago, just January and February usually with the biting cold. Every year we get the predictions that 'this year' will be a really bad winter with low temperatures for weeks on end, but they don't seem to get it right. I know we need some below freezing temps., to kill off various bugs and diseases, but nothing too low I hope.
I feel for the wildlife you have, as you say if they are foraging this early what will they find later? I think I would have to invest in food stuffs for the deer, but of course you probably have larger predators that you don't want to encourage. Best of luck with the weather, dream on about the Spring.

We just got over a big cold snap, now it's the torrential rain. It stole the autumn color from the trees and now everything is a pale brown.

I feel cold just looking at it! It's cold here and raining but nothing like what you have.

The weather changes are unpredictable this year because of the Jet Stream and other climate changes. All swirling about where they shouldnt be.
Glad we have Grows on You with lots of lovely gardeners who have saved their garden/ holiday photographs to share with us all. Its a wonderful gift. I recommend and log on most days. Seem to have lost our Australian members.

Oh Lori it sounds awful - at least living where you do you'll be prepared fr the worst. I hope you don't get snowed in and that you have a good big food store...

I feel sorry for you Lori. I don't know how you can stand it.
I hope it doesn't stay that cold too long for you.

I sound like a complainer... sorry folks. I chose to live here, afterall. And now comes the big BUT~ lol....
BUT I DO WISH.. that it didn't seem like always winter. It's Narnia! I'm always amazed by how fast everything comes to life in the spring... even a very late one, like the last one! nothing happens gradually around here!
Having GoY friends who commiserate is a comfort. Hub and I and the dog, cat and bird will be fine. wood in the woodshed, and food in the fridge... lots of tea, coffee, chocolate and good books and things should be OK.
Temps have soared to plus 2 C. over the last two days. The dizzying changes makes for a persistent cold/flu season.
Stay healthy and warm everyone!

I wouldn't blame you if you did moan. I moan when I see one snowflake lol

Lori - I bought a few houseplants at the nursery yesterday - bringing my garden indoors essentially. They had all kinds of fun projects you can work on over the winter - build & paint a birdhouse, indoor herb garden, all kinds of bulbs & plants for indoors, etc.

It's true, Hywel... that first snowfall is almost traumatic. ;-(
I like the indoor herb garden idea, Paul. I have a large aquarium which is taking up room... perhaps I could put it to good use with a few plants and a grow-lite!

Yes what kind of aquarium do you have?

I have a 60 gallon tank that I bought in a desperate attempt to save my goldfish when I moved. I had left them outdoors through the winter in my other place (pics on GoY) but it gets so cold here that I was worried about losing them. They all expired anyway. sad story. I've been digging ponds, and ponds, and ponds and every year the spring brings silt and I have to dig them again... so this spring, with other things to worry about, I gave up on the pond and put the now empty aq outdoors over the summer. was thinking that I could modify it... make it a terrarium or just keep my houseplants in it. (Saw Stan's pics of an aq that he keeps his waterplants indoors... that got me thinking. )

Oh sorry about that. I used to have a marine aquarium with exotic salt water fish from around the world. Do you remember that rolling blackout we had a while back? Not sure if it affected your area. But that was the end of my marine aquarium. I like the idea of water plants.

Have you seen Stan's post? He's in SanFran. It struck me as a wonderful idea. I'd leave the little herbs in pots and the aq would act like a terrarium. Remember those? I had a number of them ages ago.
The weather is supposed to become very bad overnight.. we have been forecast for 20 mm. of freezing rain. I hope it's not going to be like 1998. Most of Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec were without power for weeks. We look like a marshmallow world out there but the sun is so warm that the trees are dropping all the snow and ice...I guess that's a good thing as they are soon to be iced again.

Oh that's cold. What about reinstating those native Sarracenias that you were telling me about in your wet areas.

Excellent idea, Siris... the bogs are quite solid now, I think. Too many flies, (blackflies and mosquitoes) in spring, and in a bog..they're there all summer too. Autumn is your best chance but this autumn my health has been an issue and winter blew in sometime around Canadian Thanksgiving in October... It's still on the to do list though.

I couldn’t handle it Lori. You Canadians are tough cookies!
