Raised Bed

To carry on with the changes to the odd circles of gravel at the bottom of the garden we decided to use the stones taken from the fire surround in the living room to build a raised bed along the wall.

This is the fire place surround in the living room. Whoever built it used the hardest cement/mortar I have ever come across. It took hours and hours with a hammer drill to remove each bit, layer by layer. A messy job as well. The amount of dust was staggering. I took buckets of it down to the Re-cycling place.

The site for the raised bed.

Under the gravel was a sheet of blue plastic. No idea why.

I cut the plastic rather than trying to remove it all.

No idea what the paving slab in the corner is covering. I did lift it to look, but it seems to be sitting on a pillar of bricks, so I left it in situ.

I dug out a trench and piled the soil against the wall.

The first line of stones begun. We decided on a curved shape for the bed to follow the curve of the wall.

The lowest line of stones in place.

Back filled with soil and grit mix

I used some of the house bricks to make the second line.

More stones added to the front and the back

Filled up with more gritty soil.

Gravel spread over the top.

Planted up.

And for those who may be interested in the result of removing the fire surround.

we had a firesurround and wall divider like that when we moved in here in the mid 90's. it also took a heck of a lot of effort to break it up and remove. It became hard core when we built a retaining wall.

the finished result is beautiful. well done on all that graft.

Had the room carpeted since that last picture, but not got an image of how it looks now.

Loved the re-cycling beter than going to landfill, and your new fire surround looks so much better.

Oh I so wish my hubby would look indoors and start with the decorating, lol..
Great bit of recycling going on, why get rid if you can work it into your ideas, that wall didn't seem to do anything at first but you have created a lovely area there, makes a smashing backdrop for the new beds....I like it the sitting room, looks good as well, hope you are taking time to relax a bit and admire your handywork....
