As you can probably tell from my garden pictures, the garden is running a little wild at the moment. However, with the recent bad weather this was a definite bonus as the birds seemed to really take advantage of what seeds and fallen fruit was left from Autumn.
I was really impressed when this guy landed and stayed for 3 days, during the snow, last week. I had to look him up, as I hadn’t seen one before: he’s a Fieldfare! There were flocks flying over at the same time but I think he was looking after number one for a while.
On the third day I saw him take off and fly back to a passing group of birds and he was gone.
The resident Blackbirds were not impressed as he chased them off the apples.

Hi Rbf - nice photos that eye stripe makes them look so cranky , impressive birds much bigger than our thrushes .
Unusual to see one on his own - some years ago lived in a house surrounded by pyracantha bushes and one bad winter a large flock of these and redwings arrived.
Spent a couple of days stripping every berry off them and moved on.

Lovely RBF. We had flocks of these flying around a few weeks ago. I thought they were thrushes but BB reassured me they would be Fieldfare, do you remember BB.

Yes Dawn...remember you werent sure.Rbf has taken such good close ups here easy to see how they can be mistaken for thrushes !

Thanks for all your likes, it was such a lucky thing to be able to get such clear pictures; he wasn't budging for anything!
I agree BB and Dawn, at first I thought it was a thrush but couldn't work out which sort because the spots on the front didn't seem quite right lol! They almost have bird of prey features I think.
A whole flock must be amazing to see and I bet they're quite assertive in a big bunch if him on his own was anything to go by ... cranky is definitely a word to describe his attitude hehe!
