My visit to Monet's Garden

I’ve been rather out the GoY loop for most of the last few months, due mainly to my husbands health, but we have just got back from a trip to the UK…..and oh yes that rain! On our way we stopped and visited Monets Garden at Giverney, a thing I have wanted to do for many years. I thought I would share the photos with a few GoY pals, although I’m sure many of you are familiar with it.

Lots of poppies, as you would expect.

What really surprised me is that it is just a large cottage garden, with very little structured lines of beds, which is the normal french way.

The water-lilies, of course, love to know how many photos taken in just one day by visitors, just of them!

The garden is designed so that it is possible to snap away with your camera and in spite of all the visitors you can get lovely photos, without people in.

This was really the most formal line of planting we saw.

Another thing that I noticed (along with others I spoke to) is that there were weeds! Which gave the garden a beautiful “normal” look. Well, normal for my garden anyway!

Far enough North to expect rain, there’s me on the Japanese bridge with a large umbrella….as insurance..it worked…no rain!

And lots more poppies!

I want to go back now in the Autumn and then early Spring when the flowers will be different again. But it has taken me about 20 years to get there this first time, so most unlikely.

This was taken from the window in the house….strictly against the rules…but…whatever!

Hope you enjoyed the virtual tour!

Glad you enjoyed the pics, Steragram, it was just a riot of flowers as you can see, not what I expected at all.

Thank you for sharing this with us. It is a fantastic garden. Those roses are to die for. So many flowers on them. I do hope we can join you again at other seasons.

nice to see you popping up again, and in Monet's garden!
what lovely photos.
indeed very different from the usual rigidly structured gardens you have come to expect in France.
Love the poppy border against the house, riots of colour, and that pale yellow rose, beautiful, why did i think i didn't like yellow roses??

Hi Resi, I have just two roses, both climbers and that's it! but I love looking at (and sniffing) other peoples roses (any colour) they facinate me. I just find them too much trouble to grow myself.

Lucky you Troddles...I would love to visit there. I'm glad you broke the rules, it's a great shot of that part of the garden. Monet was such a wonderful appreciator of the flowers and of the garden wasn't he.... I think we all share that heart, even if not the talent for painting them!

Troddles - just in case you don't get back there at another time of year, there is a book called "Monet's Garden - Through The Seasons at Giverny" by Vivian Russell with a story of the garden, it's decline after Monet's death, its restoration, and lots of photos from different seasons. Recommended

Thanks Andrewr, I did buy a book whilst there called Claude Monet at Giverney, which has a number of photos in it, but I will see if I can get a look at the one you mention as it is specifically "through the seasons".

Karensusan, it seems that all replanting that has been done has followed the sentiments of Monet, in that bare earth was an anathema to him and he loved to compose images of everyday common or garden flowers.

Lovely photos thank you. I have never been there but I would like to, that's clever how you can take photos without masses of people,

It's very pretty. I'm pleased you were able to pay a visit. As you say, it would be nice to see it in the different seasons, and I hope you'll be able to do that sometime ...
I always enjoy looking at Monet's paintings, and the garden was enjoyable too :o)

Well, if he didn't like to see bare earth, I reckon he has a few followers on Goy...Oliveoil is definitely in that vein! :D

Stickitoffee, it opened at 9.30 and we were walking in the door at 9.40! It was a Saturday and we parked easily as well. But when we left about 2 and half hours later (we walked around the village and visited Monets grave) it was very crowded with coaches (Japanese of course).

I keep going through the photos mysef, Lilcrawford! I know I could never aspire to roses like that, but I am going to get some poppies next year!

My hubbie took one photo of the lily-pond and it came out blurred, he swore it did it on purpose and called it an "impressionist photo" Hywel!!!
