Raking up the leaves

Here is a picture of the piles of leaves I raked up yesterday! It took me two hours and there are still lots of leaves left on my apple and pear trees. The picture only shows you part of the garden and piles of leaves. This time last year I was coming to the end of leaf raking but this year everything is hanging around a lot longer due to warm weather. I don’t really mind doing it, its good excercise and my resident robin keeps me company in the hope of a tasty snack!

Scotkat I have composted leaves in the past in bin liners but this year want to build my own leaf composter. So I am off tomorrow to get the chicken wire and stakes to make one myself... Hopefully will have one ready to go by tomorrow..

Leaf mould will be much appreciated by the soil ... OH and I made a leaf bin on our allotment ... wonderful crumbly leaf mould after a year.

Your trees look nice growing in the grass - so different to a plain ordinary lawn :o)

I have found leaf mould invaluable in the past to help the structure of the soil. You look as if you're going to have plenty and think how good the exercise is for you as you rake them up!
Yes Hywel, I agree so much nicer.

Waddy, do you dig the leaf mould into the soil or leave on the surface? If you do dig it in, how deep do you mix it into the soil? Still got lots of leaf raking to do so will be kept busy for a while!

Hywell-was very lucky to take on mature garden when we moved to Shopshire 7 years ago. In fact agreed to buy the house more because the garden was perfect for my two boys and two cats (one of which has sadly passed since) My garden is very mature and lots of work but has turned into my haven - away from family, work and housework!!

Yes tell me about it - I have been bagging leaves for the past 4 weeks - garden by the looks of it is about the size of mine hard to tell from the photograph - but I do have a large rear garden

Hi Amsterdam, I usually spread it over the surface of the soil and then gradually work it in as I Plant, hoe and weed etc. That seems to do the trick.

Thanks Waddy.

Leaf mould is worth its weight in gold, I collect as much as I can and hide the bags near my compost bin, I cheated yesterday and collected loads up with the mower, at least I now have a green lawn again, and the birds are loving it today grubbing around , especially the blackbirds and my friendly robin....
