Birch Bonsai for Sheilabub

After reading a blog by Sheilabub last year on her collection of Bonsai trees I was inspired to have a go myself. A friend kindly gave me two Silver Birch seedlings from her garden that were about twelve months old, one has been treated as a Bonsai and the other put in a large pot.

This is the little Bonsai which is doing well and is already starting to have a silvery trunk

The two seedlings in comparison

There is a huge difference after only ten months. I’m on the look out in Morrisons for a small Acer to try next.
Thanks Sheila

Oh wow I'm impressed, I remember seeing a programme sometime about bonsai trees and how they wired the roots to keep the tree small, I got a new Acer from our local Wilco's last Monday, it was only a small one cost was only £3.50p, it would be ideal sizewise to train Annella, perhaps your local stores will have some....

I went in to Morrisons again today Lincs (through the hailstorm!) and came out with a full size Acer 'Orange dream', will try Wilkos next week :o))

It's very interesting to have a direct comparison with one given the bonsai treatment and the other not, good luck with both!

A great result Annella, shouldn`t mind having a go myself.

Nice buy...the orange dream. You know I keep saying I'm going to try this too. I really will now I've seen how successful yours is! I also want to have a go at some topiary, but I never get around to these things!

A very interesting hobby...I'm afraid I don't have the patience!
With regards Morrisons...I must say I have been very impressed again with the quality of their plants .I have a few customers who I get plants for and usually I get them all from a local nursery who grow them all themselves. However, as well as buying them there I also got some from Morrisons and they're every bit as strong and healthy!!!Having said that...I wouldn't get them all there even though they're cheaper because I like to support local businesses as well!!!

Well done Annie..they both look great..I have no qualms about getting my plants from that supermarket..my purse likes the price..but then again,I buy from local GC as well..depends what I want..I bought a purple Acer there for £2 the other week..they still had some today..also some smaller Orange Dream,as well as the larger one,you bought..

No babies in there today Bloomer, just the big one :O)))

That's amazing in such a short time Annella - I thought it took much longer to get any results approaching that.

That is a success! How lovely to see signs of the silver bark on it too.

You will just have to keep going in on a daily basis,Annie..:o)

I will try to get a close up shot of the trunk when the wind drops a little

Bloomer don't worry I will Lol :o))))

Thank you Annie! Great idea to show the comparison, and isn't it amazing the difference, just by restricting the root growth?! It will be exciting (next year) to see if the new leaves also come smaller on your bonsai :))

The gentleman talking about Bonsai at Chelsea (yes I did watch one programme) said these little trees should be kept outside, and well watered.

He was so right Diane . . . and fed (which I've only just started to do with my poor starving little ones!) but I did wish that they had given him more than 2 minutes to tell us more ;)

I must catch up with the Chelsea coverage...I've had a very busy week. I have to say though, some of us on here could have done a better job than that jinny blom...I can't get over how awful that garden is!

Mmmm - apparently that strange object made of "mud" in her garden for Prince Harry is a metaphor, but I can't remember what for! It's certainly way out of scale, and spoils the rest.

Yes Sheila...a lot of thought went in to the garden, and not much design I think!

Doing well Annella, such a rewarding hobby.....
