Some wildlife and new bloomers!

We’ve had a couple of interesting visitors to the garden.
Firstly a green woodpecker

and then a fox. It had an injured hind leg and was obviously hungry as it polished off a rotten apple we’d put out for the birds before limping off. The badger is not real!

A few more snowdrops are now fully open

Galanthus nivalis “Anglesey Abbey”, with flat glossy green leaves, unlike the usual nivalis

Galanthus elwesii “J Haydn”, notice the heart shaped green marking. It’s an easy going cultivar which has clumped up fairly rapidly

Galanthus plicatus “Diggory”. Notice the textured outer petals. As the flowers mature they curve inwards forming a bell shape

The next 2 pictures are of Galanthus nivalis “Lady Elphinstone”. The characteristic which differentiates Elphinstone from a normal double nivalis is the yellow colouring. Unfortunatley this is not stable and this year in a clump of 15 – 20 flowers, I only have one yellow.

Galanthus plicatus “Wendy’s Gold”. The yellowness can vary in this snowdrop and my form is a yellowish – green as you can see.

Last of the snowdrops for the moment is Galanthus woronowii a dainty little plant which I grow in a pot.

Lastly for something different a couple of Spring flowering colchicums

Colchicum doerfleri, which I grew from seed

Lastly Colchicum kesselringii which is meant to be easy to increase but I’ve grown it for several years and this is the first time I’ve had 2 flowers on it.

I love the woodpecker ag. a bird we don't seem to get in our garden and you have some lovely named snowdrops, i'm getting greener by the minute & lastly the colchicums are wonderful. I'm coming to Bucks in April.

What lovely photos. The Green Woodpecker looks great, you are so lucky to see it in your garden. Poor fox with his bad leg. Good that he can still find food though.
Your snowdrops are really beautiful, and what a good selection you have.
Lastly, you would have good clear fingerprints - they show up so well.! Good photography.

Thank you for the nice comments everyone. We have seen the fox in the field at the back of us since the photo was taken. Still limping but at least it's warmed up a bit so itmight find food easier to come by.
Mad, sorry about the fingers, they are so sausage like I'm surprised you can't see Walls stamped on them let alone the fingerprints. I'd better remember to wear gloves before I commit my next bank job :-) In my defence, they are not normally so dirty, I had just been repotting!

Smashing Photo`s,lovely one of the green woodpecker, pleased the Fox is ok, I know they can be a problem for some people but it`s still good to see them .......
