In times of drought and soaring temperatures, Aussie koalas get thirsty!

I had to share this. Saw this today doing the rounds of the email network at work (all photos are copyright-free and free to share) and while I had a bit of a chuckle it also made me feel a bit sad.

It’s a bit of a mistake to believe that myth that koalas do not drink – yes they do get around 90% of their hydration from eucalyptus leaves but these photos show that, when they are suffering, they will have a drink of water!

These photos are all recent photos taken by members of the public – these are all wild koalas, not koalas in sanctuaries! The heatwave down south has taken its toll on the wildlife as well.

Now this last one will tug at the heartstrings! This was published in one of today’s papers. It shows a rather old adult wild koala being given a drink by one of the bush fire brigade volunteers – note that the volunteer is holding the koala’s hand/paw and the koala is holding on to him too!!

Lovely photos. Yes we have to look after our fellow inhabitants of the planet.

oh, so glad they are being looked after. A lot of the wildlife must be so desperate.

What wonderful photos! Smiles, but sadness too, for the ones that haven't been lucky enough to find water - by whatever means it comes!

Thanks for sharing them with us. We are all thinking of Australia, and see the awful photos from the south on our news.

I remember seeing a programme about a Koala sanctuary in Australia. A lot of the rescued animals had badly burnt paws from the fires and were completely helpless - it was very sad.

Saw a similar photo online yesterday. So very sad. These animals must be desperate to approach humans for water. Great blog, thank you for showing these photos to us!

These are gorgeous to see but so sad that these poor creatures are so in need of water. I hope it eases off and that those affected by the fires are soon relieved; watching the news is heart wrenching at the moment and makes me realise how much we over react to a bit of snow.

What wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing these with us Bernieh. The poor things. At least some wonderful people are helping them through the drought. I love the photo of the koala with his head in the sprinkler.

I have a friend from Australia. I've asked him of the major fires in the recent years. He said that alot of animals as well as people suffered greatly. He knows quite a few that were victims of some of those wildfires. But just like people in Colorado and around the usa ,they are very persistent and will rebuild. Hopefully with better ways to conserve the wildlife that surrounds them. These pictures are very well done and heart tugging. Bless everyone involved in helping the animals a b d people who are in need.
