Had enough of the rain now! An End-of-Summer Weekend in Oz!

After waiting to get into the garden for weeks and weeks over the summer … I managed it finally last weekend! The heat, the humidity and then the rain brings gardening to a stand still for most of our summer. But then last weekend … a triumph! … almost two glorious days gardening … only interrupted by a heavy shower or two of rain.

So all this past week I was planning and thinking … roll on the weekend … the last weekend of our summer! I was so looking forward to getting out there again, especially after working so hard in the greenhouse garden last weekend.

BUT … can you believe it! The heavens opened once more!! It might be the end of summer … but not the end of the ‘wet’ season!

There was absolutely no chance of finishing off the potting up out in the courtyard garden ….

and no chance of getting out into the greenhouse garden to sow more seedlings!

It was time to take a comfy seat out on the verandah ….

gaze out at the wattles in bloom ….

… and appreciate the last of the Lagerstroemia flowers.

Then??? … What does a frustrated gardener do when she’s had to shelve yet another weekend’s worth of work in the garden? Well for one thing … spend an hour or two drooling over some gardening magazines and catalogues ….

and then ???? By late this rainy Sunday afternoon I had to resort to COOKING!!! Apple crumble anyone? (Didn’t get a snap of the scones in time!)

and Britain is getting a soaking again today too !

So far this year TT ... well since around the middle of January to now ... we've had around 40 inches of rain! It's been another decent 'wet' season this year ... but after another round of localised flooding in our city this weekend, everyone has had enough now!

even though its hammering down with rain your garden still looks amazing berieh, so lush and green, a tropical paradise as i see it, wouldnt mind sitting with you on your varanda and just enjoying the view, :o)) oh and a piece of apple crumble, ummm

28 Feb, 2010

your garden still looks great Bernieh..... great views... and yes please to the apple crumble....lol

It seems we are all fed up of the wet no matter where we are, must admit your garden looks a picture Bernieh..........

Lush is the word that comes to mind ! here we are fervently hoping for some sun and you've got winter to come! hope the weather gods are kind to us all :0)

Your view is so lovely, even in the rain. It must be great to have a garden view from a comfortable dry seat. :-))

28 Feb, 2010

Your garden is beautiful and I envy you your verandah - there's something very enjoyable about sitting outside in all weathers but being sheltered at the same time. The closest I get is sitting out on a fine but cold day warm inside a sleeping bag (pulled well up round my neck) with a hot mug of tea. :))

Oh Bernie what a wet Sunday no comfort to you to know we've had mist and rain for three days now so no gardening here either mind you no scones or Apple Crumble here either, your crumble looks delish.... maybe tomorrow lol

I love your rain and I wish we had it here. This cold weather is making me feel depressed. I might not be able to go out in the rain, but I can't go out in the cold either, even if it is dry. At least it's milder when it rains.
I hope you get some dry weather soon - but dry and WARM, not like it is here.

the five day forecast looked good here until friday-- sleet forecast AGAIN :>(

1 Mar, 2010

Thanks one and all for your comments ... the forecast here is for more rain and thunderstorms all week! There's a possibility it might clear on the weekend ... which would be great because my new plants have arrived!!

I think we all need the weather to clear so we can get out into the garden properly!

You're so right Spritz and Twiggy ... I might be housebound with the rain but I do have the verandah to get out to and the view over the garden into the bushland ... not so bad! As a lot of you noticed the garden and bush is looking very lush and green ... can't complain about that!

Sorry everyone ... apple crumble's all gone. We had it with vanilla bean ice-cream ... delicious!

Sorry to hear rain stopped play yet again but you still have a very pretty courtyard even in the poring rain I thought of you this afternoon when I was working out in the garden ….well when I stopped for a cup of tea and a lamington (very nice lady gave me the recipe). Then back to potting up my geraniums ready for summer.
Fingers crossed for better weather next weekend have a good week :0)x

Lol ... Sueb ... I think we can admit you into the honourary Aussie club now! Sounds like you had success with the lammie recipe. As for the rain ... no let up yet. More rain predicted for this week, but hopefully the sun will come out soon.
Potting up has been halted ... and new plants arrived just yesterday so I'm eager for the sunshine and the fine weather now. Keep those fingers and toes crossed!

2 Mar, 2010

Thanks Bernieh …Lol! The lamington was brilliant I’m hooked now, next time I’ll take a photo.
I have been bad …..very bad…. I ordered a load of veggie plants on Saturday from a company in Cornwall. Then yesterday I went to the garden centre and spent a load more on seeds Gaillardia, Honesty, Osteospermum, Marguerite, Nasturtium 2 kinds of carrot and beetroot. As well as 30 plug plants Impatiens Geraniums Fuchsias. Then today I went to the market in our little town and bagged a bargain I got a Gravillia in bud in a 3 litre pot for £4.00 :0) in the garden centre I would have had to pay around £12.00 Not to mention the seed trays and compost!
Oh and I am meeting a friend for coffee on Thursday we are going to another garden centre wonder what bargains they will have! ……I’ve decided I like being bad Lol!

2 Mar, 2010

Wow ... you have been bad! Sounds very much like someone else I know ... I've been visiting the nurseries for two weeks now. I just keep popping in and I'm blaming it on the weather ... it's withdrawal symptoms because I haven't been able to get out into the garden much at all.
Like the sound of your grevillea bargain ... you'll have to post a photo of that one. Lots of lovely seeds should make for a great summer display too ... more photos!

Must say that crumble looks lovely Bernieh!

Your garden looks like a tropical paradise, that rain must be really keeping it very lush, hope it stops soon so can get out and enjoy it!

3 Mar, 2010

Thanks Micky ... looks like the rain is abating now ... hopefully this weekend we'll get sunshine again!

3 Mar, 2010

Hi Bernieh ~I have added some photos Lol!

3 Mar, 2010

Hello Homebird ... just catching up with your comment at last! Sorry ... no crumble left ... and I'm so glad everyone enjoyed the pav. Sounds like you'll know the recipe off by heart pretty soon!

5 Mar, 2010

Righto Sueb ... I'm off to find your photos ... bad girl!

Bernieh:

Your garden looks amazing with all the rain! Is this wet season as rainy as last year? How many inches of rain have you had so far this wet season?

We've had a lot rain this year...and everything is so green...many people are calling it San Diego-Ireland. It's suppose to rain all this coming weekend...maybe 1 - 2 inches of rain. It's such great news for our drought.

Bernieh:

Do you have Coconut palms on your property? -- I though I saw some in these photos.

6 Mar, 2010

Yes sure do Andy ... there were 4 up until the end of the 'dry' last year but at the beginning of the summer one of them gave up. The other three still look happy and healthy though.

6 Mar, 2010

Great blog Bernie, that's some rain you've got !!!

6 Mar, 2010

Woops ... sorry Andy I missed your comment above the question about the coconut trees.
The 'wet' this year didn't quite match the amount of rain that fell last year ... came close .. we got over 40 inches this summer and it looks like it's all over now that autumn's begun.

Further down south though they've been getting phenomenal amounts of rain ... lots of flooding inland, but no-one's complaining too much because they've had years and years of drought.

6 Mar, 2010

Thanks Louise ... yes as I've just explained to Delonix .. we've had another very good 'wet' season this summer just gone and now the 'dry' begins!

6 Mar, 2010

Bernieh:

From what I can see in the photo...your coconuts look very healthy! Do you know why the one coconut palm died?

I've seen all the flooding problems in parts of Australia on the news. It's pretty incredible! It's been the same here...very few complaints about all the rain in California (with the exception of the fire-burned areas around Los Angeles...which have been evacuated many times this year so far because of severe debris-flows).

have so enjoyed reading this blog and the one about that garden near where you live. You commented on my rattlings and I saw that you wrote " sunday morning" So I HAD to click your name to see, where you live! Of all places, tis down under! I was soo delighted to read this. I have family living in Australia and an internet acquaintance! I have had pc problems for over 5 months last year and wasn't on internet. Just catching up now and will read more postings and sites from members now that I have caught up.

I first found out about Australia's flora from Australian embroidery magazines and later embroidery books from Australia. I don't buy them anymore, as I don't embroider anymore. Can't find the needle for the thread.. Never mind the hole in the needle to put me thread in!

I loved everything you wrote and WILL come back to read your ''rattlings", hihi. greets from brush and thanks kindly for commenting on mine.

OH!~ Loooooved the photographs and views... um um, I have the bakingbug for the last little while, but can't eat the stuff. So am soo glad, your apple crumble has finished!

7 Mar, 2010

Thanks a lot Powderbrush for your comments ... well now it's late Sunday arvo downunder and another hot, blue-sky, puffy white could day is drawing to a close. It's amazing to me to see just how many GOYers have family living here ... shouldn't really be that surprised I guess as so many people get the chance to live all over the world.
Had to chuckle over the needle and thread comment ... I myself have got no chance at all of seeing the eye of a needle anymore ... so frustrating! And the small print in a phone book ... I've got buckley's chance of seeing that.
Glad you enjoyed your visit ... you're most welcome to visit my photos and blogs anytime ... their starting to pile up a bit even though I only joined a little over a year ago!!!

Our friends live in Buderim Bernieh, your garden reminds me of photos of their garden. They are near the Ginger Lily factory, apparently when in flower they have big displays.

8 Mar, 2010

Hi Pamd ... well your friends are very lucky. I've been to Buderim and it's a gorgeous spot ... also been to the Ginger factory and that's definitely worth a visit. They make the most amazing macadamia nut and ginger biscuits ... so delicious.

10 Mar, 2010

Ooh they sound tasty :o)) Wonder when they're coming over again !!
