I'm only buying compost!!!

After another hard week at work i had a lazy day yesterday so today thought i would nip to the garden centre to get a few bags of compost determined not to be tempted to buy any more plants.
I found the compost i wanted but the green fingered monster took over and yes i ended up buying more plants, a couple of Aquilegia’s £2.25 each (bargains) and two half price Clematis.
While i was in the garden centre we had a massive hail storm and it was quite funny watching everyone running for cover then realising we were all in a large greenhouse while the hail was pounding down on the roof.
Although i spent more than i planned i was interested to see how much the tree ferns are now as earlier in the year i treated myself to one that was reduced to £100 (most amount i’ve ever paid for a plant). Imagine the smile on my face when i saw the same size in the same shop now priced at a massive £250 i decided then i deserved the 4 cheap plants i bought today. It just shows not to get too carried away during the year and wait for things to be reduced.
Hope everyone is having a good day with better weather than we are having at the moment.

Oh, I know this scenario only too well! For me, it 's just as well the GC is not any nearer than it is.

I just can't help myself ojibway93. we have at least 4 garden centres within 15mins drive from where we live.

Oh dear, Bill. That would be really bad news for me!

Ah. If there's anything better than buying some unplanned-for plants, it is buying some unplanned-for BARGAIN plants.
Glad you had a good trip to the garden centre .. and I guess you did remember to bring the compost home ... ???
Stormy weather here too. Hail earlier, and now dark clouds are looming ...

Bargain plants are always the best Terratoonie. Yes had a good trip thanks and had to dodge the hail when running for the compost to put in the car. I think i'm going to need more now though so i might end up buying more planned unplanned bargains tomorrow..

Take your umbrella and your wheelbarrow ;o)

We've had a sunny day here, although rather breezy.
You can't go to a garden centre without buying plants can you ;o)

It's been sunny here today Hywel, and your right you can't go and 'just look' its rude lol...I'm a bit stupid though because just around the corner from here is a tiny garden place (not big enough to be a garden centre) and most of the plants are half the price of the major stores. A lot of things aren't marked up what they are, or what they cost its all a bit higgledy-piggledy but real bargains to be had. I really must start going there first instead of on the way back and realising i've paid over the odds.

Terratoonie, you've just given me an idea to patent... A attachable umbrella that clips to spades and forks so we can continue in all weathers. Dragons Den here i come...

That conjures up a wonderful vision, Bill! I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't get out of a garden centre without buying plants! And don't we love the smug feeling when we bag a bargain?! There's a great nursery just a few miles away that supplies a lot of the local supermarkets and the garden centre. All the prices are so much lower, and the plants are in tip top condition.

The smug feeling is great Melchisedec. There is one slight problem with bargains though, i end up buying stuff because it is a bargain and not what i need lol.. I could do with finding a nursery like that in Stockport, so hint hint if anyone knows of one please let me know..

Gertrude Jekyll always said that one should look at the space and decide what to put in it rather than buy a plant and then try to find a place for it! I guess she didn't have to contend with all the temptation of a garden centre, though! Nurseries that grow their own seem to be becoming an endangered species and much as I love going to garden centres, it is frustrating when the staff can't tell you when certain stock is going to arrive (or even if it will)

I believe Melchisedec the Wyvale garden centres now have an online sourcing tool for any unsual plants that you might want and can order them for you. I've not used it but might try it one day. I am still quite new to gardening so haven't really got any unusual plants and have just filled borders with the normal type of plants but thankfully after spending a small fortune the borders are pretty full now. Hopefully when i can buy a greenhouse i can start properly growing my own and buying unusual plants.

Today i went to the garden centre and I ONLY BOUGHT COMPOST, I resisted temptation for once!

I am very impessed!

It might have had something to do with having £15 worth of money off vouchers and not getting paid till tomorrow to be honest Melchisedec..

Its too much of a temptation isn`t it, I tried going with my daughter last year but did not take my purse, when I arrived back home I then had to pay my daughter as I`d still bought plants and was indebted to her for a few hours, lol....
