A bit of History to explain about Yorkshire Day,ladies..and gents,if any of you are interested.:o)
A yearly celebration, which started in Beverley, Yorkshire ,in 1975,but the White Rose goes back to the Battle of Minden,Ist August, and the wearing of Roses in the headdress on that day, which,in the case of the Light Infantry, the successors to the King's own Yorkshire Light Infantry, was a White Rose.
.
It was originally started as" a protest movement against the government of the day"re organisation in 1974.,which I presume was the disbanding of the Yorkshire Ridings, and has been an annual event since...eg..The West Riding, now West Yorkshire, but it did also include parts of Lancashire, just on the other side of the Pennines from where I live. Still a bone of contention to many..!
Here endeth the lesson ! Lol. xx

Hope you enjoyed your day Sandra. That rose is a beauty. I wonder if any other counties have a special day?

Hope you enjoyed Yorkshire Day, Sandra! Your photo shows a beautiful rose in bloom!
I do find the War of the Roses history so interesting.
I'm not too far from Beverley, 8 miles or so, I didn't realise Yorkshire Day started there when I was a little 'un.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your good wishes for Yorkshire Day, and it seems to be getting more popular each year now.
I love History too,and especially from one's own region..
I'm glad you all found it interesting especially for those of you that were born here, but left at a young Age..
Kate,we loved Beverley ,but have only been once, but hope to revisit again one day.Lucky you, living so near, :o)
Chris, I only know of one other County with a special day, which is Lancashire..I think I read recently,it's the 27th of August ? but don't quote me. x

Too late for Yorkshire Day, but I like this little story:
Sam's wife Betsy had died and Sam was thinking about a tombstone. Betsy was a regular chapel goer - in fact she was a pillar of her local chapel. That wasn't really in Sam's line, so he went and asked Betsy's Minister what woulds be a nice thing to carve on her headstone. "Well" s minister said "She never missed Chapel, and was always around when anybody needed a helping hand. and never a hard word for anybody. How about "Lord, she were Thine"?
So off goes Sam and gives the order to the monumental mason. The next week he goes to see the finished article but either the mason couldn't spell or he'd got distracted because the final letter of the inscription wasn't there. "Eeup" says Sam," tha's missed that e off" Oh dear - I'll put it right for you tonight- come back in the .
So back goes Sam foirst thing in the morning to see the finished job:
"E Lord, she were thin"

I didn't know about Yorkshire Day either. hope you had a good day.
I'm not from Yorkshire but London but I did have some friends living up in West Yorkshire, in Otley. I often hitch-hiked up to their house & spent a few days with them. That was at the back end of the '60s maybe in '70/'71 as well.
They took me to Bradford & Shipley & a few other towns or villages at that time. I also visited Leeds.

Balcony I was once going to Otley for some reason I've forgotten, and got into conversation with another person on the train who asked where I was going.. I him it was my first visit and he said Well, if y'aven't been ter Otley Yer aven't lived... Its sobering to find out how long ago that station closed and the tracks taken up...

Stera, as I was reading your comment I - almost! - remember some sort of witty song or saying or something about "going to Otley" but I can't remember any more about it.
Maybe I'm confused with another place. Do you happen to know of one?
13 Aug, 2022
Balcony, you wouldn't be thinking of 'On Ilkley Moor bah't hat' would you ? all in the same area..:o)
13 Aug, 2022
Thank you, Bloomer, you may well be right! I know of that song but can never remember the words other than the title repeats itself at least 3 times as a sort of chorus.
15 Aug, 2022
It seems likely Balcony.Although I've have been to Ilkley town many times,I've never been on Ilkley Moor, with or without a Hat ! :o)
