EARLY DECEMBER AT FOXHOLLOW GARDEN

Here are a few photos taken today in my garden. Probably the first day for some time that we have had some real sunshine, although it still managed to rain again by mid afternoon. This is the time of year for me, what I refer to as the busy season being over. So no more relentless weeding, watering, mowing, edging, and generally trying to keep all the plants looking in good condition. This is now what I call the quite season, when I can start all the major replanting and other alterations planned for the coming year without the distractions of general garden maintenance. Although the garden can be relentless at times, I doubt I would have it any other way, I always feel the need to be among my plants and out in the garden twelve months of the year…weather permitting!

Platycladus (Thuja) orientalis ‘Shirley Chilcott’, the pyramidal conifer in the foreground, with Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Gum Ball’ the mounding shrub to the left, extremely slow to loose its leaves in winter.

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Aurea Densa’, over 20yrs old and still only 5ft tall

My small propagating tunnel

Pinus x pseudopumilio ‘Rokoko’

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Nymph’

View looking back to the house from the front end of the garden.

Abies koreana ’Kohout’s Ice Breaker’ – discovered as a witches’ broom on Abies koreana ‘Silberlocke’, and one of the best conifer introductions for many years.

Picea mariana ‘Nana’ – again this plant is over 20yrs old and measures about 2ft high by 3ft wide.

The usual view looking back towards the house from the far end of the garden

I enjoyed this blog Stephen, what a long way this garden has come. It must overwhelm you at times but very rewarding?

Absolutely beautiful as usual Bluespruce. I just love the curves, circles and shades. What is the grass next to your 'very small' propagating tunnel?

Tt - glad you enjoyed the blog.

Denise - it does at times with only evenings and weekends to work on it, but not usually too long before I get over it :0)

Skillen - the grass is a late flowering Miscanthus sinensis called 'Fare East'

Just one word to sum everything up ...... PERFECT :-)

I must look out for some of these witches brooms. I have a thuja 'Danica' about twenty years old now at it really needs replacing as it falls apart at the slightest excuse

Lovely garden.

Derek - you're probably right about the stones, but all the materials used were either buried or hanging around the property when we moved there, so thought it best to use them rather than waste them.

lol i also know a few broom riders Andrew lol... this is amazing Stephen... ofcourse your garden is likely to be at is best with a bit of frost on some of thoughs delightful shrubs.... as i remeber from last year a real winter wonderland :-)

7 Dec, 2009

Angie, Who knows, another 'winter wonderland' blog might still materialize with the right weather conditions...if I'm still around here :0)

7 Dec, 2009

GOY, Angie
Lovely, Derek :0)

Derek - also forgot to add, that all the materials found are real stone or terracotta slabs, not modern concrete ones, so I think that was the main reason I re-used them all for pathways through the beds.

I think the the paving stones fit in really well with the surroundings, and great that they are recycled.... and on the other front., yes me too Steve x

8 Dec, 2009

How much longer can we last Angie ? x

8 Dec, 2009

not much i think... it's getting all very ridiculous is'nt it.... i'll keep logging on for the data base.... i need that for business purposes... but it would be a shame just to be using this site in that way...

I agree, it's a valuable tool, not that I have used it recently, takes too long to update previous entries which is something I would continuously need to do. After I submit an update it takes you back to page one, then I have to make my way back to where I was in the first place, which I find very time consuming... if that makes sense ?

8 Dec, 2009

oh yes it does... i know just what you mean i have the same problem but i gues you have more pages than i do anyway.... i might have to invest in a suitable programme for my PC, then no need for the added extras if you get my gist.. lol
