BLUE STERLING NURSERY

Blue Sterling Nursery is owned by Jim and Barbara Smith, and is situated in Bridgetown, New Jersey. The nursery is wholesale, with 60 acres under production, and supplies garden centres in many parts of the US, with mainly conifers and Japanese maples. Below are a few photos of their private gardens, and gives a fairly good insight on how to use conifers associated with other plants in the garden landscape. Something that I think the Americans do very well.

Cedrus atlantica glauca ‘Pendula’

A couple of Japanese maples featured in pots on the patio area

A mixture of conifers, maples, and other trees and shrubs around the pond

Dwarf conifer display in a large container

Mature Acer palmatum variety (In full sun!) with Pinus strobus ‘Pendula’ to the rear

Thanks Girls,
Dotty - yes acers in full sun they do a lot of it in the States, and they get hotter summers than we do, some are more adaptable than others but moisture at the roots is key!
Sbg - we did a tour of some of the major collections and nurseries in the mid-west, and eastern seaboard back in August 2004.

Sandra - you'll have to tell me about your American visit and the places and gardens you've seen sometime.

Hywel & Sandra - conifers can look good in containers, with the right selection and a large enough container, doesn't have to be exclusively conifers either, i have seen some good imaginative combos over the years.

If you ever get the chance to go back, then for plants and gardens I can recommend the Pacific North West, Oregon, Washington State, and up into British Columbia in Canada.
