Gardening with wildlife.

Following a lovely week end – well for February , it was such a treat to spend the whole week end in the garden. We ve only been here a year and the garden hadnt been touched for at least 20 years that any one could remember.
Old tyres chairs ivy growing from the walls across the lawn up through a strangled lilac and meeting on the other side..you needed a torch to see it even during daylight.
The wildlife of course loved it and gradually accepted our presence.
Last autumn seemed to spend days clearing sycamore leaves I then put damaged windfall apples on them and the blackbirds spent the winter months gorging on them and turning the leaves over they have created brilliant leaf mould for me !
Not pretty but very effective – thank you.
The small hardy cyclamen are appearing
The crocus are coming through more regularly .. oh lost my marbles years ago and keep digging them up in the garden – dont think I ll ever find them all again !
The remains of a giant over grown buddleia and ivy from the walls ..borders cleared means all our little helpers can move back in.
Jenny wren can clear all the little bugs from the apple tree.
Robin can get back to grubbing around amongst the plants
And blackbird can take a well deserved bath … not sure where those bubbles coming from suppose that goes with a high fruit diet ..no wonder he bathes alone !

22 Feb, 2009

Hi Janey..yes still expecting first class cuisine, and were getting increasingly fed up of our tidying up.This means nothing to them, and after a couple of hours were shaking their claws as if to say get out of here and let us continue to feed in OUR garden ! Lol

Hi Bonkers ,
Thanks for the lovely Blog and it's great that you have been able to get into the garden again and do some chores. We have so much to do in the garden, and there are signs of spring bulbs beginning to shoot. It's been lovely here today with sun and blue skies.
All best wishes to you and Jane. xx

Yes, it was great to get outside in the sunshine again. At last I have emptied my composted bin, evicted a rat who seemed to have taken up residence there, and mulched the clematis and various other shrubs and perennials. The bin is ready to compost the next six months prunings etc.again.
23 Feb, 2009
Lovely blog & photos as always, well done.
23 Feb, 2009

25 Feb, 2009
BB, your Secret Garden is fascinating! Sounds like you've both done lots of hard work getting it sorted but it must have been amazing not knowing what you were going to find.
26 Feb, 2009
Thanks Dawn...lots more work to do,but a garden is never finished is it ! Just keeps growing and changing.Chopped the buddleia to just 3 feet, but got rid of a lot of dead wood...plenty of new growth at base so butterflies will be able to enjoy it again this year !
26 Feb, 2009
It's so good to be able to get out and about again though isnt it. The butterflies will be smiling :0
26 Feb, 2009
So will we....not long to clocks forward....brilliant..long evenings again !
26 Feb, 2009
