WALSALL ARBORETUM (part 1)

Last Wednesday I went for a walk around Walsall Arboretum with this small but intrepid group, unfortunately it was quite a dull day, but still quite mild.
The ‘Arbo’ as it known locally is a Victorian Park and the lakes are the result of limestone mining. Over 80 acres of parkland containing over 200 species of trees and shrubs. This park is only a five minute or so walk from Walsall town centre.
The Arboretum was officially opened on May 4, 1874 by Lady Hatherton (no idea who she was lol). The park consisted of two lakes, two lodges, a boathouse, bandstand, several summerhouses, a tree lined promenade, space for dancing, a flagpole, croquet lawns and a cricket ground. Wish I’d have seen it then! There was even a steam boat which sank after a bad storm. In 1881 the park ownership was taken over by the Council and admission became free.
Side entrance to the Arboretum from Broadway North
Nice bedding display in front of gate.
In now
Fancy a game?
Little ones play area still being worked on. My Grandaughter Aislinn gave it her seal of approval this summer.
This is the Leckie Sons of Rest building, must find out about it.
These poor geese were gathering around hoping for food … no such luck:o(
This stream is running low at the moment. Years ago I saw crayfish here.
This bandstand has recently been refurbished to the original plans.
This is the amphitheatre where music lovers can sit
Beds of wildflowers
This is the main entrance …must be halfway round I think.
You can see the back of the band stand across the lake and on the left is the boat house. This used to be full of rowing boats used mainly at the weekends …such simple fun ….and the good news is they may be bringing back the boat hire! :o))
This is the clocking in clock from the old Walsall bus depot
I think this is an otter? took a while to make it out:o)
We are now entering the Gallery garden and I will end here. . I will put on the second part soon. The Arboretum is described as the ‘jewel in Walsall’s crown’ and I was very pleased to see the improvements made. It really is a beautiful tranquil place. Hope I haven’t bored you … and hope I won’t bore you when I do the second one:o))

"Edward Richard Littleton, 2nd Baron Hatherton (31 December 1815 – 2 April 1888), was a British peer and Liberal Member of Parliament.
Hatherton was the son of Edward John Littleton, 1st Baron Hatherton, and Hyacinthe Mary Wellesley, eldest illegitimate daughter of Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley. He was elected to the House of Commons for Walsall in 1847, a seat he held until 1852. He then represented Staffordshire Southern from 1853 until 1857. In 1863 he succeeded his father as second Baron Hatherton and entered the House of Lords. He was not so active a politician as his father and Hansard records only two interventions in Parliament - one in the Commons, and one in the Lords.
Lord Hatherton married Lady Margaret Percy, daughter of George Percy, 5th Duke of Northumberland, in 1841. He died in April 1888, 72, and was succeeded in the barony by his son Edward. Lady Hatherton died in 1897."

Hi Stera, I can be there on the bus in about 15 minutes, but it's like so many wonderful local places .... not often visited by me. It's odd isn't it, if I found this place while on holiday, I would rave about it:-)

Bored? Not a bit of it BA. What a tranquil place this is. I really enjoyed my armchair stroll.
However no matter which way I looked at it, I couldn't see the Otter in that sculpture :(
Never mind, the rest was wonderful, thanks for sharing it :))
