Fatcakes for birds

Did these photos last year, so thought as autumn is approching i thought i’d tell you how i do them and it works out so cheap to make them. I get the cheapest dripping i can find melt it in the microwave, mix anything in the melted dripping like old biscuits, bread cake, crackers, cereals, bird seed and nuts, infact anything really, then put them in some small containers, let them go cold, then freeze them, and just put them out as and when for the birds, and they love them, and they only cost a fraction of what you pay to buy them, oh you can put fruit, and the meal worms in them aswell.

The birds love them, all your buying is the dripping,as most of us as got the seed & nuts in anyway, and the rest of the stuff we'd be throwing in bin.

Hi Clarice, It's a clever way to save money and the birds really love them. But just a little warning as we found to our dismay....so do rats !! Soon after we started to put fat balls out we saw these horrible creatures scavenging underneath where we'd hung them. So no more fat balls for our birds I'm afraid ! Shame but maybe it's because we live in the country fairly near a farm. I believe they go for compost bins as well.

Hang em over a bird table so they dont shred bits on to the ground....

Ground squirrels with alopaecia........as much of a rural problem as an urban one then Pinky ? ; - 0 (((
9 Sep, 2009
great idea.... i used to make bird cakes when i was a child....
9 Sep, 2009
I've been putting these fat cakes out and fat balls for quite a few years,up to yet no probs with mice or rats, touch wood.
9 Sep, 2009
I put these out every year, and anything that falls on the ground gets hoovered up by mice, voles ( they're kinda cute ) and occasionally Mister Ratty who pops over from the donkey shed or the riverbank. However, now we have young Master Pip, they'll be thinking twice about it, methinks! He lurks in a big nepeta bush, waiting for them to pop out and - BANG! - they're histoire! Shame, but nature, red in tooth and claw...

I also find if when theres anything on the ground Woody, my woodpigeon comes eats everything. So dont think there would be much left for the mice etc.

What a brill idea Carol, someone was offering a bird feeder on freecycle and I've put my name forward so now I know what to put out on it! Thanks a lot. :~))
