Fern ID

Hello
A question rather than a blog. John and Charlotte walked her dogs today (I stayed home rose pruning). :-)
They were in a woodland and came across this Fern. It was about a metre tall. I would like one :-)
Any ideas.
Thank you

Yes it looks like Dryopteris affinis to me too. But remember many of the named varieties we have to day were just found in the wild any way. The Victorians had fern mania and many oddities were collected and named way back then. So if you want a named variety go for it.
If you want a good large fern then there is one I have but I need to think about its name.

Woodwardia fimbriata. 5-6ft tall evergreen. pretty fern leaf in my opinion.

Thanks ladies.
I love all ferns, I think we’ll go with Dryopteris affinis which is good as I bought six from Beth Chatto’s in the autumn when they had a free postage weekend. I also got a Woodwardia fimbriata so all good

You're sorted Dawn! :) I've had to remove a few of mine. I didn't realise how huge they get! But two are now in large planters, so only one or two have gone into the hedge. My favourite is actually Dryopteris wallichiana because it has beautiful black ribs. That one would be hard to part with!

Lovely big fern Dawn. Arching nicely.

Karen, I have Dryopteris wallichiana somewhere hopefully still. In the woodland I have the space so in time they should look good. I don’t remember seeing photos of your ferns.

I tend to snap them when they are just opening up Dawn. But there are some pics on here somewhere.

Thanks Meadow :-)
As it was in the wild probably just Dryopteris affinis?
