Storm Dennis

It rained heavily in the night, the babbling brook was very high and fast flowing, probably 4 feet higher than usual.

As soon as it was light I ventured out to check out what Dennis had been up to.

I was a little shocked to see my bridge had gone!

The bridge had been lifted and dumped a little further down, the power of water should never be under estimated, the bridge consists of 7 or 8 eight foot long railway sleepers, weigh a ton, John joined them together with steel angle iron for this very reason or they’d have all been washed away, so no way will we move them as a whole so another job dismantling and re-siting , hey ho.

We get used to it but it’s another job, and I can’t get over to that part of the garden at the moment.

Blimey Dawn! That's incredible! It looks like just a little stream and the next thing you know your bridge is caput! I hope this stormy weather goes away soon. I'm off down to London and on to Dorset on the 25th. :) Good luck getting the bridge sorted. xx

Wow! What a good thing you hadn't planted the bank up yet! Well good luck to you both replacing the bridge - maybe include a step up on each side when you put it back!

Karen, the brook looks so innocent in summer or periods of dry, just a couple of inches high. These poor people who have their homes flooded! The speed water rises is scarey.
Let’s hope the weather settles for your trip down south.
Stera, John is looking at the bridge today, raising the height is a bit difficult as we have to get the mower over, wheelbarrow etc. I have gunnera in the banks, submerged, they don’t mind.

Hope the bridge gets sorted. If it has to be disassembled maybe when rebuilt leave some gaps between the sleepers to allow any future water to flood through the spaces rather than it becoming a surf board?

What is happening to the weather is very unsettling isn't it?
It is a job to do on a much calmer, drier day sometime soon - we all hope for that.

It never rains, but it pours!! Poor you, at least it's not your house flooded like so many folks. Stay safe.

Dennis really took its toll on you. Sorry about your bridge. Hope you get a better one up soon. I'm glad it wasn't worse.

It's amazing what the power of water can do, but doesn't the stream look impressive with the extra water? It obviously has illusions of grandeur and wants to be a river! At least it is on the perimeter and not close to the house where it could do more damage. I really feel for the people who must be weeping looking at the forecast, when they have been flooded already.

People always under estimate the power of water. Sorry Dennis caused you problems, but the main thing is you are both safe.

Yes, I can deal with this outside, water never reaches the house.
I have gunners on the banks on this part, they were totally submerged, growing on the banks low down is difficult or impossible.

Lol....Dawn...great image in my head of your ‘gunners’ being submerged! I know what you mean of course. X

Crumbs Dawn that bridge is no lightweight is it, as you say it's not the house, its heartbreaking to see all the floods in peoples homes and businesses, I admit I grumble about the state of my garden but compared to lots of others I am amongst the lucky ones....No end in sight yet, although we have had a dry day, albeit a very windy one...

Very windy here too...and now heavy rain. They did say that we could expect weather patterns to get stuck for more prolonged periods from now on. So lets hope for a prolonged spell of sunny, warm springtime ...soooon!

I think the weather is gone haywire. North Carolina and Virginia got more snow than New York. We hardly got any snow this year. I think it snowed once in December. Strange!!

Hi Lin, our mild winter has brought other problems hasn’t it, pouring with rain again.
Karen, Bathgate, crazy weather.
