Woodland Planting

We hired a digger in late autumn to do some ground works and before it went back I got OH to scrape the weeds from under the tulip tree area so that during winter I could get digging and clear it to create a new woodland plant area. It was a good time before the spring bulbs started to push through. It’s not a huge area, around 8m x 8m.

This is after the scraping off of the stinging nettles couch grass and all other perennial weeds.

So much couch grass but the soil is great. I’ve acquired quite a few woodland plants over winter (some from friends) so I’m looking forward to seeing them grow. The conditions should be perfect.

I still need to finish the first dig then go all over again probably twice to try and get all the couch grass then I’ll add some well rotted manure.

I guess I won’t do the exciting planting until the end of the week as lots yet to do. It’s a nice winter project.

Thanks Karen :-)
I have a feeling we will meet one day :-). I was dreaming I was digging in your garden the other night, how random is that and I said to you, “your soil is lovely”.
I’ll see what I can do about the Shepherd’s Hut ;-)

That area will no doubt be wonderful once you've cleaned out the couch grass & got your planting in! Looking forward to seeing the results in the summer!

You'd better make that two Shepherd huts Dawn ,I'm coming as well Lol , they do say stinging nettles only grow on good soil which explains your good soil :o)

Is this woodland part of your garden ? It must be wonderful in the spring walking around it and seeing all the lovely spring bulbs. How lucky you are ! I am sure all your hard work will be worth it !

It’s going to look absolutely wonderful when you have it sorted, one of our garden openers grows thousands of crocus tommasinianus in her woodland, looks stunning.

Yes Rose, the garden drifts into the woodland. It was a field 20 years ago and we planted the tiny trees :-) I’ve been working on it ever since.
Dotty, you told me last year about the tommy Crocus, I did plant some in there but not seen them yet.

Haha yes I think we discussed they must do OK as the trees are deciduous. I hope mine appear.

Those crocus will look heavenly Dawn. I remember a few years ago walking round Bishop Burton village, not far from me and coming across a cottage with its garden just full of these beautiful crocus, lavender, lilac white and blue...just like pointed candles, beautiful!

They must have looked beautiful Janey, the tommies are the best for naturalising aren’t they, I will have to keep getting some each year :)

They really did Dawn, I hadn't seen this type before, it was breathtaking!
