Planting of Woodlanders

Further to earlier blog, I’ve cleared an area of the woodland to plant some woodland plants. The digging and weeding done – hopefully the bulk of the couch grass removed, resident snowdrops retained. I’ve dug in some well rotted farmyard manure to give them a good start.
Here is the plant list. Some are lovelies gifted by friends :-)
Astilboides tabularis
Trillium (Red)
Dryopteris wallchiana
Athyrium vidalli x3
Podophyllum peltatum
Lamium maculatum x3
Oxalis oregana
Drananculus vulgaris
Liriope
Uvularia grandiflora
Rodgersia podophylla
Sinopodophyllum hexandrum (Podophyllum)
Peltoboykinia watanabei
Iris Lazica
Asarum canadense
Telima grandiflora
Ajuga, bronze leaf and reptans rosea
Cardamine waldsteinii
Omphalodes Verna white
Maianthemum stellatum
Mitella breweri
Vinca minor white
Polygonatum humile
Cornus canadensis
Saxifraga stolonifera
Paris quadrifolia
Centaurea blewit
Rubus tricolour
& finally ….
A white flowering woodlander, bit of a mystery, long name starts with Hexandr …. ? See below.
Anyone have any ideas on this one?
I’m going to treat this area as a nursery from where I can propagate and then move to other areas of the woodland.
I’ve been collecting these plants for a few months and it’s great having an whole new area to plant them together as opposed to the usual task of trying to squeeze them in somewhere then forgetting where they are.
I can’t wait to see them develop :-)

Thanks Balcony, Meadow
A mixture of clump forming and ground cover plants.
If we hadn’t scraped the bulk of the weeds off with the digger in the autumn, no way would I have been able to tackle it.

Excellent Dawn! Can’t wait to see them. I love Cardamine, but can’t grow it here. Sorry...no idea what that last plant is.

Thanks Karen, I hope the Cardamine thrives.

Could your mystery plant be a Hexastylis? if it is it has been renamed an Asarum but I cant think of a white form. and to be honest the leaf looks wrong for it.
so don't mind me haha.

Wow Dawn, this is going to look amazing. Lots and lots of lovely plants, hopefully, someone will come up with an answer to your last plant identification.
Look forward to seeing your plot developing.

Thanks Kate.
Seaburn, Karen - time will tell, the lady I bought it from said the name will come to her ....

I now think like Karen it is Vancouveria, I used to have one, a different species link to my plants page below and it is a pretty little thing. Photo of its leaves. This woke me up at 3am thinking about it. The new leaves look almost maidenhair fern like.

that's only because i'm not in a quilt planning mode....
;o)
I often plan quilts in the quiet and darkness of the bedroom, I can visualise the colours better.

I think I woke up more to do with the snoring ! his or mine not sure. But as I said to Karen being awake isn't often a problem, I like thinking things through. I gave a talk to our HPS group tonight so used the time thinking about how to improve the presentation. so your query got me thinking about plants to use.
6 Feb, 2020
That’s OK then. I hope your talk went well.
If I wake in the night it’s usually about things on my mind that I’m concerned about. What was the subject of your talk?
7 Feb, 2020
Yes my talk seemed to be well received: Right plant Right place. was the theme.
I can wake up because the owls have stopped hooting and its too quiet! I am such a weird person. haha

Great talk subject and Beth Chatto’s mantra and very true. I’m pleased they enjoyed it. I love to listen to the tawny owls calling to each other, I’ve not heard them for a few nights either, they’ll be breeding soon.
