A cautionary tale

Having read Paul’s blog I feel I would like to remind all gardeners to ensure that they have up to date Tetanus cover. In the early 80’s when I was nursing, I had a lady admitted to my ward with a nasty little wound having been stabbed by a rose thorn. She rapidly became really, really ill and was transferred to the Intensive care unit. Sadly she died four days later from Tetanus!

What a good point to raise Diggin. I don't think I've ever had a tetanus jab.

I know I should, but I'm scared stiff of needles, so tend only to have those I really must have. Stupid I know.?

I'm pleased that some of you think it useful to have brought this up. I'm never sure! This is the one jab I'm careful to keep up-to-date.

Erm,you wouldn't see the needle ,Julia ! :o) ,and it's over in a second..but I can understand how you feel..I'm lucky in that they don't bother me at all..so used to them,I guess ..

Nor me and I get pricked by rose thorns quite often some being by my path but I was reading last week rose thorns can kill you .

Is it true that if you've had 3 you don't need to have boosters anymore?

I think you need to have had a total of 5 vaccinations to be considered fully covered, they say that gives lifetime cover. However, if you work with soil, manure etc, I think the recommendation is for a booster every ten years. Please don't quote me though.

Yes, good advice Diggin.....it is easy to ignore these things. They seem so insignificant! But, I surely learned the hard ward but others, as in your example here, aren't so lucky!

When my doctor asked me what was my favourite hobby. I said that I am passionate about gardening. He offered me a tetanus jab right there.

A good reminder,Digginfit..most of us get attacked by garden plants..and sometimes it isn't always enough,to give a good wash, and some kind of Antiseptic product..Luckily,I had my Tetanus renewed a couple of years ago, after being bitten by a dog..Our GP has never checked when I last had one ! A friend of mine pours neat alcohol on hers..whatever she has available..:o)
