Physocarpus opulifolius "Diablo"

Nobody told me what a bee and butterfly magnet this shrub is! An absolute delight. No less than 22 (yes that’s right 22) Painted Lady butterflies all at the same time on Sunday and today I’ve just counted 7 Red Admirals. I couldn’t even hazzard a guess at the number of bees or the number of different species that are clamouring for the pollen. Far better than any buddlia I’ve ever owned!

Excellent.

Nice to know you're doing your bit for the butterfly population.

Does this shrub have a common name ? I often find
searching for a particular plant by its latin name so hard,
as growers use common names.
Thanks.

Its also known as ninebark but it isn't usually listed as that anywhere

I try Waddy. :) And I hadn't seen a Red Admiral for a long, long time so I was delighted to see seven !! But I think it may have been a one off as I have only seen a couple of butterflies on the shrub since then. Still plenty of bees though.

Pleased you saw the Bees DF. It means there are no chemicals sprayed around that garden. Bees are affected by these chemicals, and lose their ability to navigate back to the nest/hive and die.
The variable weather has not helped any of us get started this season. Butterflies are the same.
I feel the cold now I am 88. Am getting a boiler suit for
next winter. I understand they are much warmer to work in.

Good idea Diane - it will keep the draughts out!

I try not to use any chemicals if I can help it Diane. And the shrub is in my garden.
