Winter Survivors

I put my favourite smaller pots of geraniums in a small plastic shelter. Really for Grow-bags. Covered it with an extra cover at the front and all but one survived the severe winter. Not under cover.
The fuschias in large tubs and some geraniums in large pots, nine altogether, go in a huddle, semi undercover, in a double fleeced tent arrangement made out of one pack of fleece sheeting. Using pegs to secure.
The plants emerged after the severe winter, looking rather sorry for themselves. They were drenched with provera + fertiliser and left a while. Then one by one sorted out with new top soil and cleaned up. Back under the protection again along with plug plants potted up.
The overall result is so far so good.
This is the plastic shelter . The red geranium is Trailing Tomke. These smaller pots are easier to to decant to renew soil and check for vine weevil.
This is the first flower this year of Trailing Tomke. This is a marvellous geranium. It is flowers well. Strikes cuttings easily and is very vigorous.
This is the fleece tent with 8 or 9 larger pots inside it. There is a mixture of geraniums in really big pots to promote good flowering and larger fuschias in large pots. They all survived the winter (not hardy) and have had top soil renewed and treated with Provera. Too big to decant. Fed and watered and looking OK.
To illustrate the plants are coming on well. I even managed to get a survival of a really old sort of standard fuschia. I am really pleased about that. It can be so difficult with standards without proper facilities.

Not very pretty I admit Gee but really effective. Thanks Dylan I never bargained for such a severe winter when I set it up in mid December. Tomke is a really good trailer Gee. A freebie from our next door Neighbour.

Just had a thought Gee, if I hid under the fleece I might get some decent bird pictures. The magpies are still lurking. They are sooooo handsome but they make me feel nervous. They empty the bird bath in a couple of washes and they look as if they own the place!!

Had to smile at the thought of you lurking under the fleece with your camera. That would give those magpies a fright - they'd think they were seeing a ghost :)

They have done well, with all your protection. I must admit I thought it looked like a motorbike covered up in your third photo! Love the colour of Trailing Tomke - beautiful rich colour.
