Making my borders wider so set off this morning ordered top soil and mushroom compost. afternoon spent digging but i have such poor soil not one worm have i found. Any ideas how i can get them in my garden. When i had my allotment the soil was full of worms even the blackbirds used to sit and wait for a feed.

Yes... and I doubt the worms would travel well by Royal Mail ... Lol.

Its like the compost bin, with all the red brandling worms..you don't know how they get there,as they don't live in the soil in the garden..I'm sure once you get some decent stuff dug into your soil, the earth worms will do a Tommy Cooper too..just like that !! :o).

You can purchase worms from 'wiggly wigglers' and other places, but think they will appear when you add some good rotten stuff, maybe some horse manure(usually free) added might help too.

You could try a fishing site as several mail order businesses sell ordinary worms to fisherman. Should be someone on the web.

Nice to hear you are making your borders wider. More plants and less grass can only be a good thing :)

It's a hard life being a worm
Being eaten, being walked on, being cut in two, sorting out the compost bin, being posted and before tea must sort out all the garden soil, it's a hard life

Lol Jiffy :o)))

Hi Jiffy they could have a good life live by the sea but its not an easy life being a worm ,is it true they can live when cut in half. In fact i found one worm today not a fat juicy one very pale but buried again could see Joey the blackbird smacking his beak.

I've got lots & lots in the composed bin, they've bred like rabbits. the robin come to feed when i open the bin, hand feed him/her Great (not for the worm)

If you add manure they will come. Well, not come after the manure they will come from the manure. Then every time you dig to plant after that just add a bit of amend, or every spring add amend to the top of your soil then a bark on top. Or add it at the end of summer and it will be decomposing over winter and all the nutrients from it will seep down to nourish spring bulbs etc. Good luck. Good soil is half the battle, that and regular and sufficient watering.

The other day, a GoY member was complaining about far too many worms in the lawn... Wouldn't it be nice if you lived nearby and could collect the "spare worm supply" for your garden... :o)
... I've checked the GoY question ...
http://www.growsonyou.com/question/show/40099
and the member lives in Cambridgeshire... would be rather a long round trip to collect your worms ..all the way from Lancs.. Lol.
