Our Magnolias

Our large Magnolias have put on quite a show this year.
The pink one (Leonard Messell), was always overshadowed by our lovely Willow tree. When the latter succumbed one stormy night we were really upset but the pink magnolia has benefited.
The white magnolia (Stellata) gets bigger every year and always rewards us with a great display until a snap frost. This year we seem to have been lucky!
Next to it is Susan, another pink magnolia. We are fortunate that the deer don’t seem to like azaleas, or magnolias, or rhododendrons, or they would use us as the local take-away. A little family has been eating all our tulips and actually lifting the bulbs out of the containers.
Sadly yesterday we saw the body of a young deer at the side of the road, and partly eaten. Believe it to be the fawn.

I wish I could grow a magnolia I'm on alkaline soil sadly.

Amazed to see a Stellata that size, I had no idea...
Mine looks set fair to take up most of the border its in eventually then! Susan is lovely too - isn't that a scented one? What a lovely garden.

Ours is a Spring garden so we always "worry" about snap frosts.
Azaleas are still to come and the Acers are beginning to show some colour, otherwise it is container/sink/wall planting for the Summer.
I actually did some weeding yesterday and cleared the area around my two gooseberry bushes and the strawberry plants. They are few and far between but did quite well last year,
I want to plant some rhubarb now. Our last lot failed miserably. Can't understand as back home in Wales my father had a HUGE rhubarb patch, so big we were allowed to play amongst it! I think of that when I buy rhubarb!!
Susan is beautifully scented, Steragram. Worth growing.

They are beautiful.....nothing better than an established Magnolia in full bloom.

i recently bought stellata which i keep in a tub by an archway. it does look really nice there, but the flowers are now starting to go over.
used to have maigold climbing up the arch, but when i got a scratch on my hand it had to go.
