Being watched

A couple of weeks ago I went for a walk in the woods. It was a very cold, overcast and windless late afternoon. The woods were eerily silent, nothing stirring, no birdsong and I had the strangest feeling that the trees themselves were watching me.
I found myself thinking of the lines from Coleridge’s poem…
“Like one, that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And having once turn’d round, walk on,
And turns no more his head;
Because he knows a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.”

It looks a lovely wood, but I would preffer to have company if I went there. I find some places can be creepy when you're alone.
The poem 'The Listeners' by Walter De la Mare comes to mind lol. Sorry I can't think of the lines just now.

When I was at school, poetry was a large part of the English language course. We were expected to learn, and recite it aloud, in class.
Hywel....."The Listeners"
"Is there anybody there, said the Traveller...." was one of the first lines I remember.
Stickitoffee..."The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"
We used to call our goalkeeper "The Ancient Mariner"
from the line....."And he stoppeth one of three"

And what dread creature did you find
A-lurking in those trees?
Was it a gruesome vicious beast or someone very kind?
Did you continue on your walk or were you on your knees?
Red Riding Hood a fiend did find
Seeking his lunch to eat
She forgot her mother's words to mind
A stranger never to greet!
