sunflower

I made the front page of our local council free newspaper with my first attempt at sunflower growing. Sadly I cut the date off the clipping, so no idea when it was, probably about 96-98.

The caption:

Guesstimated the size by holding a stick at a distance so that the top of the stick and the plant appeared to be the same, moving my hand to where the plant started, then turning the stick sideways, getting someone to stand in line with the tip, then pacing the distance to the wall.

I phoned the Guinness Book of Records to ask the tallest sunflower – that was 25 feet. Still, only 10 feet short on my first go, not bad.

Where did you get the wonder seed from, Fran?

I can't remember! i must have had a packet of seeds, or someone gave me some.

I thought I had some sunflower seeds that I was going to plant in the new garden, sure I had, but can I find 'em?? know I had at least three varieties: maybe I gave them away to the charity shop in one load. ah well - don't have the wall space for a 15-footer now; the people upstairs could complain that it was blocking their light! *s* can imagine their surpise when it started peeping through their window!

I've seen some "mini" sunflower seeds that I migth go for

Fran you share my maiden name, 'Lane'. !

there's a lot of us about, Grandmage! I went to Somerset House on a work manager's behalf - shows how long ago that was - and while I was waiting to get the thing she'd asked them for, I looked up "lane"s - six pages of births in just one month of one year. sigh.

Brilliant sunflower :o)

thanks, TT: it really is growing in the space left by a paving stone, witha row of bricks round the edge and a bit of compost brought in from home.

I can't remember if I planted the ssed there, or started it in a pot and then moved it later. I think the former, but no idea for sure now

Hey Fran, we must have a lot of relatives somewhere out there then!!!

probably not more than a zillion or two, Grandmage - but trying to find family connections, close family, distant family ... that'd be easier with a less common name. Still, at least we're not Smiths!!!

True!! I have done loads of family research, I really enjoy it.

I haven't managed to get back even two generations: there's some "family mystery" that I raelly can't be bothered to even try to unravel - no doubt it's somethng that'd seem utterly trivial to me, but equally no doubt it seems vital to tose concerned.

I've been thinking of trying the MtDNA test, to find which of the seven "daughters of Eve" gets the credit for starting my branch of the European human race - there are some that will match your DNA to the UK, to see which tribe you're most closely related to. It'd be rather more helpful if they answered my emails!

It's all £££, of course, but I'm curious - the trouble with not having deep roots is that I don't feel that I fit anywhere, and that any strong puff of wind might blow me over!
