BBC news gives more flood alerts
They include a link for the Environment Agency; one can check the risk by putting in a river name or one’s postcode – thought it might be handy

lol checked my own postcode, of course! but my three main criteria for a new home were: ground floor; garden; outoside any known flood risk areas. this one ticked all the boxes.
When I was very young I remember dad carrying me down the street, which was covered in water. When I mentioned this to mum years later, she said it must have beent he Thames Flood of 1952 - that'd make me about a year old.

I've started on the ark :-)))
Bucketing in down here, we're on the top of a hill so we'll hopefully be ok.
I'm going to check on your link now for the River Trent, thanks for that.

Fran... you have a good memory to recall at 1 year old !
I feel so sorry for those whose properties are flooded.
Kathy .. as with you, my home is up a bit of a hill ...

I guess it was frightening for you Fran and thats why you remembered.....

I don't remember being scared, but it was certainly unusual! that's the earliest thing I can remember.
years ago I got a book from the library; London's Drowning, by Antony Milne - that put the wind up me and no mistake! finally managed to track a copy down and buy it - Thames floods aren't one-offs - well, any river floods aren't one-offs.
I don't see how the govt can justify building thousands of new homes on a known flood plain that's guaranteed to get inundated sooner or later. I wonder if that little detail will be included in the "house for sale" listings!

Its been coming down in torrents since the early hours, I haven`t seen the news yet but I really feel for anyone in the flood risk areas, there is just no let up this year, out of sheer boredom I`ve started stripping the wallpaper off in the sitting room, I figured I won`t be needed in the garden for a while...

we had an absolute torent today, it was actually bouncing back off the paving about two feet high. Seems to have moved on now, btu shee, it was intense while it lasted!

Thats what it was like yesterday Fran, its rained on and off since lunchtime today but not as heavy, still miserable though and now they say its here for another two weeks at least, guess summer has been and gone...

Had another torrentialburst last night, lasted couple of hours. Normally I like the sound of rain - my "soothing sounds" machine is set to "rain" - but the real rain was coming down with a vengeance, very loud and sounding like it meaned it!
if this hangs on for another fortnight it's really going to add some sparkle to the Olympics! ha, damp squib in more ways than one

Living up at 1,600', there'd have to be a total Polar melt to put us at risk, but a really heavy downpour can strip our garden of topsoil in half an hour, and flood the cellars for long enough to take the power out. We really should score highly in the Olympic swimming, rowing and baling out, shouldn't we?

lol I is there an Olympic Wading In Mud event? the London Games are going to be *such* fun if the weather keeps up!
I could have filled a couple of water butts in the last few days, even though I have no downpipe - a large funnel on top would have been enough!
