pigeon rest-stop

While I was out in the garden a few days ago a pigeon landed on the fence at the back; after a while it flew to the fence at the side, then after a while longer, flew back to the fence at the back. It was obvious that it wanted to do something that my presence was interfering with, so I backed off to give it some room.

When I saw (and heard!) it flop down on one of the pots on the back table, I went and got my camera and managed to get these pics:

So far there’s been three blackbirds, two sparrows and two pigeons (or the sane one of each each time) so the “bath” is doing some good as a drinking fountain, at least

they’re a bit blurred, because I only had the rail beside the step to brace against, and that meant stooping down which didn’t to much to brace me (I really must remember that I only need to press the shutter very lightly, but my first camera was a Kodak 127!).

Thats so clever, how did it spot the water?

I put some stones in the bottom (as in previous blog), partly to show where the bottom was, partly to give them something to stand on if they felt like having a dip. Can't birds and other animals smell water? anyway, it could have seen me top the bath up, I try to check it every day and top it up where needed.

They certainly can detect it in some way Fran as I found with my pond the frogs and newts just arrived.

I think it's a case of 'I spy with my little eye' and down they come :) Your patience has paid off, Fran, they will be regular visitors now.

I'd love to have something that would encourage that much wildlife, Drc - it'd hardly be a "natural setting" here, though! Have yoru or will you take pics and keep a record of how many of what turn up?

I'll have to re-site it, I think, Gee - partly to put it somewhere more open, to make them feel mosre secure, and, if I can manage it, somwhere I can see it from a window so that I can observe without disturbing them - my seeing them isn't the object of the exercise, after all! So long as it's used, that's the main thing - me knowing that it's used helps.

And maybe I can add something a bit bigger, for birds that want a dip as well as a drink.

thanks Olive. maybe I'll open up a "health suite" - plunge pool, drinking fountain, sunbed area!

Some birds won't mind you being there Fran - I'm sure they are very appreciative of the water. It's been a case of 'build it, they will come' - word will soon spread to the others.

I think they'd prefer me to stay at a distance until they get used to visiting, and get used to me; maybe then I can start creeping closer.

I rearranged things just now, took some pics, will post shortly

Once they find a drink they will return Fran, have you anywhere you could pop a feeder as well, they provide hours of entertainment in the winter months....

I've got several feeders, but not putting them out while there's squirrels here! had a couple of feeders wrecked, and worse, they were enticed into the garden, where they dug up so many plants and knocked so many others over ... even if I could get proerply squirrel proof ones, the smell of food would still attract them, and they'd still come in and wreck my troughs.
