bird in trough, not sure what

There’s at least one bird round here that doesn’t seem to like getting too far off the ground (without flying, that is). Saw something rooting about in one of the troughs on the ground – these are heavily cropped so a bit rough:

I’ve also seen it fly up from the ground around the paving, and from behind the birdbath plinths

Next post: conifer going a bit rusty, should I be worried?

It's a female blackbird. Doesn't look like a youngster that's not learned to fly properly yet. Can this one fly but chooses not to? Blackbirds do like to feed on the ground.

Lovely to watch the antics of the birds through your photos.

thanks everyone! I didn't think it oculd be a blackbird, at least a mature male, as that's all i've seen and it didn't look like that.

It can fly, flits up and down between the troughs and the bare ground behind the birdbaths.

I don't feed any birds because of the @*!# squirrels - even if I boiught some proper squirrel proof feeders, the smell would attract them and if htey could't get at the food, they'd mug my plants instead - or as well!

she is a very healthy female and as said blackbirds do like feeding from the ground as well as in shrubs.

You didn't think it looked like a blackbird because only the males are black - the females are brown like this one.

oh, I hope so, Scottish! now there's something here for them - a bit, anyway. I've got a yet bigger tray that I might put out later, if I can make sure it stays properly stable.

I saw a sparrow flitting about as well, Seaburngirl, so I got some seeds from my baking drawer (sesame, poppy, mixed seeds and something else I can't remember) and sprinkled some on the ground behind the trays, where there's some actual soil, rather than paving), then lurked with my camera, but no luck. maybe the day shift was over, and if I get up very early tomorrow I may have some luck

Thanks, Steragram; I know that hens are less colourul than cocks, as they have to be for camouflage when nesting, but I'd never seen one before, or at least, never had someone point to one and tell me what it was
