Jungle cut-back

Decided to have a go at the jungle beyond my newly-discovered back gate (actually I was in a bit of a bad mood and I need some physical exertion to work it off)

Spent about an hour or so hacking, cutting and yanking; got a lot more to do, but at least this is my “starter for ten”

For the first time I was able to see next door’s hedge in profile – it must have grown this ay, because I can’t imagine anyone being able to get round the back to shape it from there!

Do you now have access to the field behind the house Fran? Just curious where the gate was supposed to lead to.

I wondered the same.

Apparently there's a "pocket" between the houses - on my side, the road goes up, turns back on itself and forms a close; the "pocket" must be the width of the turn, and possibly the length of the road minus the house at the top and its garden.

I should be able to get to the field behind the bungalsows, but i don't want to make too obvious a path - if I can get down, others can get up! and that gate isn't likely to be much of a barrier.

There's another bungalow oppoiste next door, with the "pocket" in between - I don't want to cut back so much as to open the space, the idea was for me to have somewhere "wild and private" (-ish).

I think I'd need to make a detour to reach the field, as that bungalow's garden would overlap mine a bit. I can see daylight though the "forest" in some directions, so it can't be very far, unless that's a "forest glade"! but only one way to find out

and was your mood lifted when you had finished Fran? hope so, great to have somewhere to 'thrash' out your temper. Good to have a release valve, and what a one it is. lol I wonder how many times you will have to have a bad mood to get it cleared and for you to see through the forest lol :O) You do seem to be enjoying yourself doing all this hard work. Great to see improvements hope the rest of your garden is coming along for you too. :O)

Sadly I think the thick growth covering the back of this hedge blocking light etc made it this shape and now you have cleared it it may well grow out more and need trimming. However, it looks great there.

Reminds me of when we cleared the extension to our previous garden. Just like hacking through a jungle. At least no one has thrown old mattresses, fireplaces and kitchen cabinets on this land, as in our case.

lol @Olive, nothing like hard physical exertion to lift a bad mood - one can take it out on the work in progess, and the worse the mood the more one can vent it. (Years ago I had an idea for a business, stress-busting by "safe violence", but the Health and Safety would probably be a nightmare)

thanks @Drc - it might indeed mean more hard work in future if I clear the ground now, or at least clear some of it - if I can diminish the bindweed I'd be happy to leave the rest, but the bindweed is choking everything.

thanks @Dorjac. trues, this area has been closed off from casual dumpers - if they were going to dump, there's a whole fset of fields by the brook. of course, I don't know what the locals might have chucked over their fences! but i doubt it'll be as bad as furniture relics.

Nice work! :)

in the second-last pic you can see the roof of the bungalow at the end of the close, so I assume that the tall plants/weeds are at their fence, so I don't want to make too much room!

Well done! I find a good session in the garden great for lifting the mood too and for shifting stubborn headaches...no not the OH lol!

Maybe you could get Gary to raise the blades on the mower and then do a quick chop down there and make a pathway, just an idea less clipping more chopping. lol :O)

lol @Waddy. I did some "constructive destruction" before, to lift a bad mood - that's how I found the gate in the first place

not a bad idea,@Olive - he's got a large petrol mower so I'm not sure how it'd manage. But he's also got a hedge trimmer, and that might work for the higher growth.

But I rather enjoy the hand-to-hand combat: I can choose what comes down and what stays, there's no wholesale cutback. And I do want to have a go at do-it-all-myself.

As for a pathway, I found out about an hour ago that there is one - was watching the birds through binoculars, lowered them a bit and saw movement out of hte corner of my eye. I assumed it was one of hte cats that visits or passes through, then I saw it was a large puppy! Hadn't seen it come in, but it strolled up the garden, looked around the rose bush, then strolled off, heading towards the gate. So there's obviously a dog-sized way in, whether from a neighbouring garden or the field I don't know. Maye I should start closing the gate when I'm not working down there!
