Woodland Trust is running a scheme with Marks and Spencer to recycle Christmas cards:
… “For every 1,000 cards dropped in to Marks and Spencer stores for recycling throughout January, a new tree will be planted in the UK.”

Hi Fran ...
yes, good idea to recycle as much as possible ..
... some charities also collect used postage stamps ..
I wrote about them a couple of Christmasses ago ..
I've put a link on my blog written today ... can't put it here, because we can only put a direct link on our own blogs ..

Stopped saving the stamps ass no where local to put them.
Used to be you could leave them at our Post Office but use closing down like many others.
Giving mŷ age away ,when we were kids we got wee bottles of milk at playtime and the schools collect the milk bottle tops .
Mam got milk delivered so all our tops to went to the school.

My cards go to The Woodland Trust every year.some shops gave up,like WH Smiths, but we have M&S ,so that's ok.I also keep other cards throughout the year..birthday ones etc..which also go in with them...As for used stamps..our local Hospice charity shops has accepted them for years, and still do..maybe you could ask in your local one? It's a shame to just throw them in the bin..

We had similar project for a huge area of woods in northeastern Slovakia. Each person could have "bought" its own tree in the wood for 300 euros. So far, majority of trees -which are mostly old oaks and pines - are private and cannot be destroyed without legal consequences. It is part of old woods with wolves.

Have a look, Fran. These woods are called Woods of Wolves.

My cards come from the Woodland Trust to start with - sending back the ones we receive will complete the circle nicely. We have only just got a new M&S locally so it will be easy to take them along down there. Thank you.
Katarina that's good to hear. You might like to look at The Woodland Trust on the internet - they organise a lot of tree planting and woodland restoration schemes, and you can buy trees in memory of people.

will do, Kat, thanks
you can also recycle your spectacles, by the way - a lot of optinicans will take old specs and donate htem to charities working in Africa, giving peopel there specs that they wouldn't otherwise get, though i pity any who needs the specs I wear!

The woodland trust planted trees in an area of the Outwoods not far from here Jubilee woods, that I think was the silver jubilee then recently they planted the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee woods in the National Forest, more Coalville/Measham area I think.
they are also involved in the Carbon Capture project where landowners and businesses combine through the woodland trust to plant and maintain hundreds and hundreds of trees up and rown the country

Steragram@ I think it is not so wonderful idea to enable to buy a tree for 300 euros, as the mean salary here is something around 600 euros brutto. That means, that only rich people could easily become the owners. And our rich are the same a...h...s as those, who bought 20 % of all 10 mil worth houses in the UK this year. However, the people involved in the project are normal people, if you watch the whole film (it is worth to see), you will see that the film was created with the help of British film makers :-)

Fran@I live with three retired people here. Any of the spectacles they are going to throw away, could be used by anyone, lol. They have broken frames or are crushed by accidental sitting on them, lol.

As I understand it, they take the specs apart and use the lenses only in new frames. That way they can tailor a new pair to perfectly suit each patient

I can remember taking the cards last year Fran just not which s'market it was so thanks for the reminder, our used stamps went to the college my youngest works at so I've collected all this years hoping they still want them, if not I'll check out Terra's link...
Steve we used to collect milk tops at my school as well as all silver paper, I can picture myself sitting on the floor as a child painstakingly removing the silver from my dad and his workmates cigarette packets..........

Thanks for the information Fran. As it happens all my cards are recycled via Freya. She loves to cut out the pictures and make 'sticky' pictures.
Lincslass I can remember collecting milk bottle tops and silver paper. It was to help raise money for a guide dog if I remember correctly.

could you spread the word via your email and family contacts, and ask them to do the same? lol might make a few extra trees out of it!

Katarina you can dedicate a tree in a Woodland Trust woodland for £15. A bit different from 300 Euros! I'm going to watch the film now. I shouldn't have said "buy" a tree - your dedication is recorded but there is no mark of ownership on a tree as you don't actually own it as such.
A lot of British people are very cross that so many of the expensive houses in London were only advertised abroad so that British folk never even got the chance to buy even if they had enough money.

went to my local Sainsbury today, first time I've been out this year! and they've got a card recycling box as well, so I suppose that other Sainsbury's will have, and other supermarket chains as well

Yes our local one has its box in the store Fran and in the actual town centre M&S have one as well...

I don't know if it's "plant a tree" or another charity, was too cold and tired to ask, but if it's helping a good cause, and recycling besides, is ok by me
