Picture of a regal moth

This moth is rarely seen as it does not eat, occasionally seen at night near a light source. (This picture came from an educational site)

These moths aren't night time pollenators like alot of our other moths. This one only has one purpose at the moth stage of it's life, and that's to procreate. Regal moths mate during the second evening after emergence, and the females lay their eggs at dusk on the third day, and die soon afterwards. Kind of a sad story for such a unique looking fellow.

Oh right, on the other pic the guys were wondering what the caterpillar turned into, its beautiful.

it's body looks like one of those plush pillows on gramma's sofa! Too beautiful to last...the moth is the colour complement of the larva!...the larva is turquoise and the moth is peach..Wonder if that bright colour tells any potential predators to leave it be?.

Good question Lori, and it's one I don't have a clue to the answer ...lol.

Something so scary could turn into something so pretty ? erm ...well you did lol

As to your point Lori think you may be right a our caterpillar was eating in broad daylight amidst lots of birds feeding young anyone of them could have picked him off to feed on but no interest.

LOL..., some might question that much hasn't changed in my case Bonkers....lol.
But I do believe you two are right about animal's instincts, based on bright colors. I think I saw a program about it once, on the Discovery channel.
Me, on the other hand, am a freak of nature...;-)

Lovely moth. We are getting quite a lot of moths in the evening. The bats have started to fly around too so I suspect that they are after eating the moths.

Thanks Lindak, I'll have to go out this evening and see if we have more bats than usual this year. I'm usually in the house by 7:30 pm because the mosquitos are horrible here by the lake. I can get eaten alive during the midday hours, if I'm out gardening in the shade. All I can say is, thank goodness for repellant...lol

25 Jul, 2009

Ooh, thats better....I like this stage more, I suppose it does all its eating as a caterpillar Jerrie?

26 Jul, 2009

Yes Janey, pretty boy here, is only about the hanky panky it seems...lol

If you wear lavender it helps against the mosquitoes too. I wore some when we went to Scotland especially near the lochs in September. The men doing the gardens round the old castle we visited near a loch wore a net covering over their heads.

Thanks for the info Lindak ! I'll have to give lavender a try, it would be much safer to use than my repellant.
