The Birnam Oak (500+ years-old). Associated with Shakespeare's play "Macbeth".

This survivor of a medieval forest is thought to have inspired Shakespeare to write in his play, "Macbeth", about Birnam Wood marching on Dunsinane (The Witches' prophecy).

I love magnificent old trees like this - puts our life span into perspective, doesn't it?

Sure does! The phrase "If Trees Could Talk" is increasingly being used here to promote attention to our oldest trees. What history they have seen! What tales they could tell us!

http://www.chilternsaonb.org is a site showing special trees in my area. The Bear tree is amazing.

Have you seen the book "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" by Thomas Pakenham... Wonderful book...wonderful photos...trees of the UK in particular the Birnum oak, and ancient Yews in Scotland. Check it out, David. You will want it for your library!

I did see a couple of episodes of the TV series, Lori! Forgot that they tend to produce books of such series! Too late for my Xmas wishlist now, but will definitely look out for the book - you are a wonderful inspiration! Many Thanks for the reminder!

Most Welcome, David. There is another volume, an addendum of sorts, available as well...and I can't remember the title at present. I keep haunting the bookstores...waiting til they come on sale! "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree!"

David, I was wondering if you would give me permission to use this photo on my Green Man group? We post pictures of special tree and places as well as the many variations of the Green Man.
