Wow this is lovely, such colourful markings. Its really good to see some spring flowers in bloom, perhaps its going to be early this year, we certainly deserve it dont we?

Don't know what's happened to mine :o( I never have any success with them. They give a nice show the first year, and then nothing.
I see you have them in the ground Barbara. - I have always put them in pots. Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong

Thanks. Yes, Hywel, they're all planted around the garden and come up every year. This bed was new last year, however - but you can see how well they've done in their second spring! :-)

I've just posted a photo of part of the bed they're in.

What a beautiful colour! Seeing them has cheered me up a bit. I might even be tempted to buy some: will they be okay to grow in my border? Do they prefer any particular soil or conditions?

Lovely Iris, Spritz! They are amongst my favourite spring flowers but I haven't grown them for many, many years. I'm not sure now but I may have grown them one or two years in Spain. I must grow them again! I've added this photo to my favs.

ooo so these are out now ............... ermmm have to ck mine . lovely by the way

I think they prefer the sunnier areas of the garden, G'sdad, but any soil is fine as long as it's well-drained.

They are lovely, I agree! :-)) Well worth growing.

I have these out too, a couple of weeks earlier than last year. Mine are actually in quite a shady spot.

7 Feb, 2011

I believe they need a sunny spot to perform best - but I agree, I have a few in a part-shaded area of the garden and they seem OK. :-)

Hywel - I thnk they do better in a heavier soil. I've read that if the soil is too light, after they have finished flowering, the bulbs split into lots of smaller ones, too small to flower the following year. Heavier soils prevent this from happening. That's what the book said anyway
