Reindeer Lichen

Reindeer Lichen

This nice white clump is one of my favorite lichens, so wonderfully shaped. A taste of this and you are reminder of the gamey taste of caribou or reindeer, both eat this from the forest floor.

How pretty - so delicate looking. I suppose the lichen provide a lot of the food over winter once they are uncovered by hooves pawing through the snow. Have never eaten reindeer or caribou, but my father was a hunter and we ate moose, deer, bear, and rabbit, as well as duck and partridge. The bear was the gamiest, ugh, I am not really I fan of wild meat, but as a child, we ate what was served. I realise that wild game helped suppliment our food supply when we lived in the bush, but these days I live down south & I prefer to do my hunting with a camera, more challenging that way, and the meat supply at the local grocers is within my budget. : D

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them. :-) Superb showcase for these without any snow....still!

Reindeer has a very long tradition in the boreal as a cattle crop, from Russia around to Norway. They have been herded and eaten from native culture to now. We have reindeer sausage anywhere you go and pens just like cattle still in some places. Cows do not do so well in the cold. Its the mildest flavor, less like the game flavor. Caribou on the other hand, is very gamey. I'm not a hunter, but I've tasted them all. I am not a fan of the wild flavor much either GZ.

We have one field of cows right now where people pull off the road take photos! COming from cow country I can't believe it, but I am urged as well, they are so rare here.
