Sailor's retreat

fluff

By Fluff

Sailor's retreat

This is our summerhouse & decking...if you need sunglasses to look at the decking it's because someone who shall remain nameless bought decking paint instead of decking stain & the results were a vivid orange under the guise of 'red cedar'. The man in the shop said it would 'weather'...yeah right...in about 20 years.
Neighbours say it's so bright the Air Ambulance might land by mistake...people who take the mick are not invited to barbies!!!
You can just see the vague image of the perpetrator of this disaster taking the photo...inform the decking police!

Oooooooh, orangey/pink decking....

It's not good is it Terra? Imagine if I'd got orange pots...you've been tangoed!
Hubby retaliates by saying my solar lights make the garden look like Heathrow at night...

Thanks San...we enjoy it every day, despite the colour! It's a great place for friends & drinks etc as it's always out of the wind & very sun drenched.

Fantastic structure. I could do with one to sleep in when Julie (my wife ) has a bad snoring night. Well, that's most nights really!

Thanks Paul...you can borrow ours! Send her across with her sleeping bag...she'd be very welcome...people do sleep in there after barbies sometimes!! :0)

Hey hey ...I'll put the kettle on Paul! ;0)

Thanks Clarice...it is a lovely place to sit in any weather...if it's tipping down we caan sit inside & look out! It made the garden...the pylon behind needed the attention taken away from it!

fluff that looks brill

Thanks Donnah...Do you really like it? I've had some ribbing about the decking colour but the summerhouse has brought the garden together & taken the eye away from the pylon behind which used to be all you saw.

Hopefully the orange will fade with time & certainly with all the rain we're having! :0)

You aint the first to get caught out with the "Red Cedar" Fluff , the summer house and decking look great . It's not unlike my summerhouse , did you build it?

25 Jul, 2009

No Mac...we bought it from a local company & they put it up.

Unfortunately this is the 2nd time we've stained decking & this red cedar is now peeling off. Maybe it's the acid rain we've been having by the bucketful or maybe we should've used decking oil but hubby has just sent an 'angry from Dorset' email to Cuprinol outlining the problem.

Bet they blame the 'adverse weather conditions'. :0(

Is it peeling off the rails as well as the decking , if it's just the decking its more than likely it's suitable for fences and not walking on , I think you are right about decking oil or yacht varnish would do it.

25 Jul, 2009

It's both Mac although the decking hasn't had too many feet walking over it this year....you're quite right...we shoudl've used oil. It cost a lot of money that red cedar rubbish. It's a sore point in our house!

25 Jul, 2009

Fluff between the weather, walking on it and early next year clean it all with a pressure jetter you might well remove enough of it to be able to do something with it

25 Jul, 2009

Good plan Mac....let the winter do it's worst then blast it all away! I like the sound of that! £70 worth of decking paint...good riddance. ;0)

25 Jul, 2009

eeeekkkk!!! £70!!! once you pressure jet it, try and get it back in the tin :-)

25 Jul, 2009

I said more than eeeeeek I can tell you! I suppose I could sell it on Ebay as fairies orange squash? After all...people with no brain have been bidding for empty KFC buckets & bags of fresh air.

25 Jul, 2009

It looks fine in the picture. I love the blue pots.

26 Jul, 2009

It must be lovely to be able to enjoy the garden whatever the weather. one day... :)

26 Jul, 2009

It is too...I call it the sailor's retreat as it's full of nauticalia & my old matelot goes up there to listen to classical music which I'm not fond of!

Would love to see a photo this year to see if it weathered in LOL

LOVE it none the less :O)

6 May, 2010

Thank you for your comments all ... it hasn't weathered at all well Bloominglovely ... it's all peeled off & looks shabby. I'm happy to lose the orange tinge but can't afford to re-do it yet ... spent enough on it already!!
Now maybe if my OH had used decking oil it may not be in such a state ,,, but I'm not going to say 'I told you so' am I?!!! :o))))

P.S. I'll include pics of it in a blog soon.
