Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' (Acer palmatum)

Acer can be deciduous trees or large shrubs with paired, often palmately-lobed leaves and small flowers followed by characteristic winged fruits. Many have fine autumn colour, and some have ornamental stems.

'Garnet' is a medium-sized deciduous shrub. Leaves with usually seven deeply dissected lobes, deep brownish-red throughout summer, slightly brighter in autumn. Small purplish flowers are followed by red fruits.

Acid or Neutral soil
Moist but well-drained
Chalk, Clay, Loam or Sand.

Aspect
East, West or South facing.
Sheltered.

Propagation
Propagate by grafting or softwood cuttings.

Such a shame you can't have one Michelle. Do you not have a shady, sheltered spot where you could give it a go? They can be quite tricky and temperamental (I lost all the leaves off my 6' Acer due to a position change - too windy) but are worth it for the colour. So long as you keep them well watered in the heat and out of the wind you should be OK.

I have a spot on the north side of my house where I'm trying to grow a wild dogwood but i dont think its working a little too much sun woul a jap maple do well here? I would love some red in that spot to go with my white irises. It gets about half n half

I love your pic, they're my fave tree. Mine was a beautiful shape, arched branches, till it fell off the wall & one side completley snapped off! I was gutted but it's still growing well.

I'm looking for a couple of acers to include somewhere in the garden & would like one of them to be red. I really like this one ... does it keep the same colour through its foliage season? I know there are some that start pinkish or red, but are only like that for a short time, & then revert to green.
