Yes a great shape, have you got a picture of it in full leaf Sheilabub?

Many thanks all.
The tree is 30 years old, Bampy. OH trims the branches every so often, but hates mowing around the tree 'cos all the aphids fly out - but the birds love it!
I'm fairly sure I haven't got a "full leaf" pic, Tet . . . I didn't take many garden photos before I joined GoY - and there's a lot to live up to here. But I'll try to remember to take one for you in the Spring.

Is is slow growing or small? Love weeping trees of any kind.

i love them and have a weeping larch but i think they mostly need space around them to look their best - like this one does!

Lulu - I don't think this will get any bigger after 30 years. It's often recommended for small gardens.

Oh yes, I see...how lovely! Needs a bit of space, but you have it! It shines red in the sunshine like a 'downy' Birch, which is one of my favourite trees. :)

I've not heard of a 'downy' Birch Karen . . . does it have another name?! I often like the things that you like :)

Common as muck Sheila and looks untidy as a specimen, but wonderful in a coppice. Betula pubescens, sometimes called white birch, which is a bit strange as the bark is red, but it does go white on more mature trees. It doesn't grow very tall, and the highlands are covered with it. Spectacular in the winter when the sun hits the reddish stems and you get a similar effect as Cornus, but not so bright. I really love them, and they will grow in boggy soil too, where they often become clothed with lichens and mosses.

how old is the tree Sheila? It has a beautiful umbrella form. And snowdrops too, nice.
