I have never seen anything like this Louise, is it new? It's beautiful and yes...I want one now:-) I also love compassion I had one at my old garden, great rose:-)

Not new Bornagain.
I saw them first at RHS Wisley a few years ago and had to have one !!!
They're not climbers but 'leaners' so give them things to scraamble through.

Lovely clematis Louise looks stunning with rose, I have one that looks similar can't remember name offhand but shrubby plant that dies to ground in winter like a perennial, flowers haven't been so good on it this year wondered do you dig up and divide like you would a perennial? has formed quite large clump.

This type don't need pruning Simbad.
They die back naturally over winter and then sprout again on that old growth.

I just leave this alone, i don't touch it at all.
It's not a very tall one, height is up to 8'

I'm not sure about digging it up and dividing it .... maybe someone could jump in here and advise on that.

By golly, Louise! If I didn't cut mine back every year they would take over the whole garden! I cut each stem back to a pair of healthy buds near the plant. They grows about 8' in a season. I have one sprawling on the stream bank, and one which kind of scrambles against the rose trellis.

Mine are very similar to yours, but a paler blue. I did try digging another one that I inherited up, and moved it - but it didn't survive. I'm not sure about splitting it, obviously! It did have a huge rootball, though.

How queer, they sound like different plants don't they ?
Mine isn't a thug at all.
Maybe once it's been in the gorund more than 3 years it'll be like yours, i'm hoping it stays better behaved like this though ;)

Can't find name of mine did write it down somewhere, it grows to around 3ft with very small blue bell shaped waxy flowers at top of stems, followed by fluffy seed heads then in winter dies back completey and sprouts from base in spring, more like a perennial or shrub, grows bushy and spreads along ground, off to search for name again.

This is one of the most beautiful plant combinations I have ever seen. I've never heard of that clematis. It really is a thing of beauty as is rosa compassion, one of my favourites. My all time favourite rose is Fragrant Cloud, which I haven't seen for sale for years. I wouldn't be able to cope with it now, but I could get it for my gardener daughter if I could find it. Your plants all look so healthy.
I agree with you (in your "About Me") lawns are nice, but only if they are good. In my old North facing garden, I couldn't keep mine free of moss and I wanted lots more plants, so I got rid completely and had stone paths plus a sitting area. I would not want to expend too much energy into keeping just one plant (grass) in tip-top condition.

Mad, thank you, that's a lovely thing to say :))

That would be a nice idea to try and find that rose for your daughters garden, wouldn't it ? :)

As for grass, it can be difficult to keep it looking good i agree and especially in a north facing area.

Lovely combo, does this clematis have a perfume? I have one of these shrubby clematis moved it last year, so far so good.

13 Sep, 2009

I haven't noticed a perfume to it Daisy, i don't think it's meant to have one.

Wow! That does look good! Gorgeous clematis - I will be looking out for that one!

Elo, this one 'leans' and doesn't have tendrils that entwine around the shrub so i tie this one 'into' the shrub, rose and trellis.

Elsewhere in the garden i have ones that entwine themselves - those cling so i don't have to tie them in to their 'host' plants !
