Hoverfly on Echinacea

Hoverfly on Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)

So many hoverflies in the garden it is difficult to get a picture without them!

good pic there.

Thanks guys. Not bad for a phone camera!

Yes, we have a mini plague of hoverflies as well. Still, much better them than earwigs!

18 Aug, 2011

Have only found 3 earwigs in my garden Karensusan. I really feel for youl, it would be driving me batchy!

18 Aug, 2011

Same here with the hover flies although, not seen many butterflies.

18 Aug, 2011

Strange isn't it. I have noticed a distinct lack of butterflies and earth worms.

18 Aug, 2011

Now that you mention it...I've seen almost no butterflies up until this week, then suddenly, loads!

19 Aug, 2011

Mmm, strange indeed. Weather perhaps?

19 Aug, 2011

Probably, WL, the weather has been weird...

I am the same.....loads of buddleias in the garden but hardly a butterfly to be seen. Same last year, but then they all appeared one sunny day ...think it was early september...so there's time yet I suppose, but quite disappointed to see all the buddleja flowers going to waste!

19 Aug, 2011

Difficult to imagine buddleja blossoms without butterflies... :(

19 Aug, 2011

I know Karen, it is a very 'empty' sight to behold. Its almost as bad as preparing a party spread and nobody turning up to the party!

19 Aug, 2011

Yes, indeed, KS! :(((

19 Aug, 2011

I am removing some of the buddlejas this year Karen, they have been torn to shreds by the horrid earwigs, and their semi 'wild' look doesn't really do much for me. I planted loads in the spring because of their ability to grow really fast and attract the butterflies, but I am disappointed with them to be honest. The leaves are yellow and chewed. However, some DO look nice and I shall keep those ones, especially the variegated ones, which are lovely, and the silver leaved one which is very pretty and totally unchewed!

19 Aug, 2011

I've seen a few really nice quite 'tight' ones, if you know what I mean, KS, but on the whole they don't do a lot for me, either...bit to weedlike for me too...
...and if they're not doing their job....!

19 Aug, 2011

well yes, exactly. Thanks Karen :)
