Ficus macrophylla - Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla - Moreton Bay Fig)

This very large Australia native, the Moreton Bay Fig in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. has a spread of 145 feet and is 80 feet tall with a trunk girth of 42 feet. It has many aerial roots. This tree will celebrate its 100 birthday in 2010 and it still a young teenager.

It's very difficult to really comprehend the enormity of this tree. In its native Queensland, Australian where they grow to 200 feet / 61 meters tall and can cover more than an acre of land.

One in Glendora, CA (located near Los Angeles, CA) has a height of almost 100 feet / 31 meters tall and covers 1/4 acre.

Yes, the "Banyan type" Ficus, which this is one...grow to just mind-boggling sizes...some species can cover many acres in the tropics. Ficus bengalensis - Indian Banyan tree is a good example. Some in their native India are estimated to be around 5,000 years old and cover acres.
