Iris

Iris (iris)

One of my customers was thinning out a very congested bed of various iris varieties last year and gave me about 100 divisions. They'd all finished flowering so I had no idea what they were but potted them all up. This is the first to flower this year and I love it.

Indeed. I'm struggling to sell my plants at auction due to the bad weather. By this time last year I'd sold about 600. so far this year 50!

Thanks for the kind words Grandmage.

I am seriously considering pulling out of the plant nursery business, at least as far as auction selling goes. My profit margins have almost halved in 3 years due to increases in pot, compost ,auction fees and other things.

If I get my minimum reserve I'm only clearing 13p per plant profit ( that's if they sell at all!) and these are plants that will sell for £2 -£4 in a market or garden centre.

It's not just my stuff. All the sellers at auction are saying the same

I'm going to give selling on Ebay a try but postage costs make plants bought that way expensive.. but it's worth a try

Do you get people passing by? - you could always try selling from a stall at the front of your house. I used to ride around in the countryside looking for plants for sale I am sure others would be doing the same. Maybe not though as the price of fuel is so high these days - maybe we are all internet shopping instead of driving around.

My main work now is as a gardener and the nursery has slowly become a smaller and smaller part of my income ( 20 years ago I was a full time nurseryman)

I live in a cul de sac village with very little passing trade although I do sell a few plants from my door.

My nursery isn't open to the public because I live alone and I'm out gardening for other people most of the time .

I think the nursery is coming to the end of its natural life although I will still propagate some things to sell at auction and maybe selling on the internet may work.

My vasic problem is lack of time. I'm doing 35 gardens a week for other people and by the time I've done that there's not much time orv energy left to do other stuff!
