Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet'

Lobelia 'Fan Scarlet' (Lobelia)

Not always hardy, sadly...some years they do return, some they don't.

Is it possible that they're short lived?
I say this because one thing that I noticed about my Lobelia losses over this last winter was that it was the older parent plants (in pots nestled up close to the house) that mostly succumbed. Most of the ones out in the beds (unmulched) survived, albeit in a weakened state.
Just a thought really.

It's in the hot border, Homebird! I've also planted two geranium 'Ann Folkard' in there..in the hope that the magenta colour will clash well! LOL.

Meanie, yes, that could well be true.

Very stately looking plants, but have been unable to keep one longer than a season;0(

I think I've managed two seasons, that's all. :-((

Oooh - now I can show off. The ones that I lost in pots this winter gone were four seasons old.
I picked a out few new shoots last spring, grew them on in pots before planting out early August. These were the divisions that survived.

Just came across this whilst browsing thru lobelias. My Hadspen Purple will be 4 this coming year if it survives. Whilst tidying up the dead stalks a couple came away with root on them so Ive potted them up to see what happens. Also if the plant survives another year, I will take a few basel cuttings in the spring Meanie..guess thats what you did?

Too late - it got munched by snails. It's an ex-Lobelia. :-((

Thanks Meanie.

I don't seem to have much luck with the 'fan' Lobelias, or 'Queen Victoria', either. :-(

Im not sure it will be a good year for me next year Spritz.
Last year I had 2 hedgehogs, this year none (guess cos of bad winter) and I think we had a dearth of snails and slugs cos of warm weather in April/May..but next year??? I remember (few years back now) my lovely white iris sending up over a dozen stalks..just about to bloom and the nasty sticky creatures came and ate thru all but one stalk, which didn't bloom well, ergo no white iris!! Grrrrr!

Oh, it makes you swear, doesn't it. They lurk in the cracks of the drystone walls and make a bee-line for tasty morsels like my Clematis, Lobelias, Lupins. anything. :-((
