Tradescantia "Purple Sabre" (Tradescantia pallida)

Uploaded for Elke, to show how well it grew over the coarse of a very average summer outdoors.
The photo of it from just after I got it is here............

This plant is very easy to grow from stem cuttings.

Thanks guys!
It's one of those plants that you can have for life as it propagates so easily.

Fabulous colour Meanie has it been outside all winter ?

Meanie:

What are you doing using a common outdoor landscape ground-cover as a house plant? lol! :>)

19 Feb, 2012

Very nice, had one of these survive outside in the garden last winter, it started reshooting at the end of May, unlike many so called hardy plants!

Thanks all!
Amy - it has in a sheltered spot, but not looking good! But as PA had said about his coming back I took some cuttings as insurance and took a punt.

Delonix - it may well be toast now (see above)

Plantaholic - I've taken a chance with it too, but I'm covered by spares.

Thanks very much, Meanie. Yes, I meant indoors. Such delightful blooms, aren't they? Your looks very healthy.

Meanie:

The cold there has killed it? or is it just slightly damage?

20 Feb, 2012

This was taken last October Elke - it is looking very sad now!

20 Feb, 2012

Delonix - it's looking bad!
However, several people have had them come back so fingers crossed. I took cutting just in case though.

It must be interesting to see this plant damaged by cold. I've never seen one damaged by cold, even when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area they never got cold damage.

20 Feb, 2012

Interesting is one word I suppose............

I used to have this. They're easy aren't they.

20 Feb, 2012

Dead easy, and very rewarding too Hywel!

Meanie:

Do you like Tradescantia zebrina? I got some from a GoY member here in San Diego...he uses it as ground cover, also. It supposedly is not an invasive weed like like the very invasive Tradescantia flumenensis, which has invaded my front yard...and I can't get rid of.

21 Feb, 2012

T.zebrina is a little too variegated for my tastes! It makes a good houseplant here though.

21 Feb, 2012

Oh, that's right you don't like variegated plants.

21 Feb, 2012

I like T zebrina (or Zebrina pendula, as I always think of it, because I can't keep up with changes lol) It goes very 'leggy' though, and you've got to keep taking cuttings. It's a pleasant colour.

Hywel - there is an old greengrocers shop in our town that used to be run by two spinster sisters. This shop was stuck in the 1960's and when they retired they filled the front window up with T.zebrina and indoor Geraniums - it looks fantastic! I'll try to remember to get a photo............

21 Feb, 2012

Hywel:

T. zebrina, when grown in the ground doesn't get leggy...it gets very dense just like the very weedy T. flumenensis.

21 Feb, 2012

Yes Delonix, I've seen it in the glass houses at the botanical gardens. It looks nice, but I can't grow it in the ground, because it is too cold in winter.

Meanie. I'll look out for your photo.
