As many of you are aware(or not), remains were found in Leicester, thought to be those of King Richard 111,who was killed on Bosworth Field, a 30 minute drive away from us. After many months of waiting it was confirmed…. it was him!DNA from a Canadian, a descendent, was taken and a match was positive. Last Thursday, after a cup of coffee, a toasted t.cake, and a natter, my friend and went to view the exhibition, housed in the Guildhall.I didn’t take my camera, but took these photos on my phone, so quality might not be good. Hope you enjoy….. This is the Guildhall. We then went to view the cells, my friend had never been here, so it was all new to her.

What a lovely building!

Glad you enjoyed it.
TTand Gm, we watched the program as well, the exhibition was really good with the remains under glass and "touch panels" pointing out various details of skeleton.
Paul, the Guildhall dates back to the 13th century, and it was like the Town Hall, and Law courts of the day, with cells underneath. :-(

I watched the whole coverage with great interest and am looking forward to going to see the exhibition Gralew, to think we and millions of others have probably parked on top of him many a time, I personally think he should be returned to York.
Thankyou for sharing, your photo's are great......

Its a very old part of the City isn't it, We went to a 'do' at the
Guildhall once, the log fire was lit it was lovely.

What do you think about moving his statue from Castle Gardens?......I,m for leaving him there.....

27 Apr, 2013

Most interesting blog, saw the tv coverage, beautiful building, would not recognise Leicester now, we used to live near Leicester in Burton Lazars, many moons ago....

27 Apr, 2013

His statues can be anywhere but his remains should go home, a huge can of worms opened up when they found him, not that it matters what an ordinary commoner like me thinks.......

Even all the arguments for tomb or slab then where to put it are not nice, and I know what you mean Lincs, the poor souls bones just disinterred and being fought over........mostly it seems for money. :0(

Pam... I think his statue should be left in Castle Gardens, after all it's been there for years, and I think it fitting to leave it there. It is a very old part of the city as you say, I was brought up in an area close to Castle Gardens, but my Grandma who looked after me, always called it Sparrow Park, and I spent many an afternoon hiding behind him from her!!It has altered(like many places) now its all University buildings, and the surrounding areas student accomadations.
Lincs... I'm divided about his final resting place....at the moment I think he should stay here. In our local evening paper, they say another body has been found in the same car park... a 14th century Knight.... so perhaps another exhibition to go and see....who knows!
Dotty...no you wouldn't, but I suppose that applies to many parts of any place.

Hi Gralew, my grand parents lived at the New found pool end of town, not far from King Richards Road. ( or Kingy road. :0)

28 Apr, 2013

Pam..My grandparents lived in the area where the LRI maternity hospital is now. We live in LFE which is the "posh" end of Hinckley lol....nothing posh about me, parents lived in Wharf st. area before it became St. Matthews, so I'm Lester good and proper M'duck!!!

28 Apr, 2013

Whilst watching all the coverage my first inclination was leave him in Leicester but definitely lay him to rest properly, afterwards after doing all my research and thinking it through I decided he should be returned to York, the sort of people who are interested will still go to the exhibition, if he is not returned to York then he should be in the capital...

28 Apr, 2013

Have not hear m'duck said in years, the market holders in Melton Mowbray always used that term......happy days!!

28 Apr, 2013

Dotty...What about " Chisetts"..... Leicester people are renowned for this phrase. When anything is not priced we are known to say"How much is it" but said quickly comes out.... yes you've guessed...How long were you in Melton?:-)))

29 Apr, 2013

Ay up m'duck, my first job after catering college which was then on Pocklingtons Walk was at the telephone exchange on Wharf Street, then at the huge Cardinal building . An aunty lived on Birstall Street near the old northern station which is now part of the 'golden mile'....that station took us and lots of aunts, uncles & cousins on a steam train to Mablethorpe every year until Beechings axe fell.....happy days

I dislike all the fighting over his bones Lincs, he was a person.....and a King, not just artefacts!

29 Apr, 2013

What a small world Pam... I remember the telephone exchange in Wharf St. , and one of OH's aunties lived in Syston st. if my memory serves me well, was quite close to Birstall st.
T' Ra for now lol :-)))

They probably knew each other Gralew, it was a friendly area, like 'the pool'

LFE's a nice area to live I think, we're out in the sticks Loughborough way
Paulsponds around too Ashby way I think, he got much more snow than us recently.
T'ra duck......

29 Apr, 2013

Pam....sort of guessed you might be that side of Leics. from a comment you made about Wyville Gc. know thats the area they are... just where are the sticks me duck?(other GoYers will think we've gone mad) Val

29 Apr, 2013

Morning ducky, Dad used to call anywhere out of town 'in the sticks' any road that what him and my gran said, looking back its hard to remember some of the old sayings.....
It was never 'aint' but 'int'....." int I' good"
Or "wot the 'eck!"
"shimmy". (chemise). for vest........

30 Apr, 2013

"Tha's a good'un ennit", is used here and lots of the younger folk are "me duck" here we go"downtown" when shopping although my neighbour who is originally from Boston used to go "upstreet "until I educated her...
Not I might add by the proper speaking people who also say "Tinwell" instead of "Tinul" and "Pickworth" instead of " Pickuth".......
LOL, its good to have a mad spell when its flippin cold outside even in the g'house and ones having a coffee break....

30 Apr, 2013

We always went uptown.......

And why is Croxton Kerrial pronounced as that but South Croxton isSouth Croson......

Bye the way in the paper is an article about finding a roman graveyard under a different car park but not far away

30 Apr, 2013

My Dad was the same Pam with "out in the sticks" and yes I always go "uptown". Sometimes when I'm talking to my grandchildren, and I forget myself and revert to old sayings, they look at me as i'm talking a foreign language(which is half right) and I have to explain what I mean. Made Lewis(10yrold) laugh the other day, when I said I'd been to see "King Dicks bones" lol..
South Croson eh..... that was really posh when I was a kid... and it is in the sticks lol

30 Apr, 2013

Have to check out the web Pam, I really like my history, it fascinates me and before you say its my age I liked it as a kid many moons ago. LOL....

30 Apr, 2013

Still is in the sticks....although the pub has been 'tarted up'

I just put "leicester slang' into google and was really suprised, at how much is out there.....
All in alphabetical order.....
.
ark at it rainin......
causie...... the pavement
Okey.....ice cream......the okey pokey man.....
Ooh an giz a croggy......
Fascinating, the list seemed endless
Ah wu flabbergastid!

30 Apr, 2013

Eh up , me duks . We were just a few miles from Bosworth Field , but do you think that we were taken there during our history classes ? Never thought of it did they ?
Apparently his "family" want Dick 111 buried at York .

30 Apr, 2013

Very interesting. Fancy they found him after all these years :o)

30 Apr, 2013

They have just found some romans buried 1700 years ago, not far from where he was, they were under a car park too

30 Apr, 2013

Gralew we moved from the Midlands to MeltonMowbray when we got married, had two of our children there, must have lived there 7 years in all, before moving back to the Midlands, and then down South, my BIL lives in Aylestone, but have not been back to Leicester for some time now....still miss the the old villages, and the lovely countryside.

30 Apr, 2013

Pam.. What pub are you talking about? i'm gobsmacked!as you say endless list.Read about the other discovery in last night local paper, wonder who he is!
Dd... Well fancy that, i would have thought Hampshire is far prettier than Leicester, i've never moved out of Leicester.
Driad.... I never knew where Boswoth Field was till my children went there on a school visit. There are so many interesting places round and about here, very historical too
Thanks everyone for your comments.T'ra for now

Mornin....
The pub in South Croxton is the Golden Fleece, been modernised now and is now open and airy,
I remember tiny rooms and an old lady (bit like mrs mills)playing the joanna and the whole pub singing along to all the old songs.........

1 May, 2013

That was a good Saturday night's entertainment , the old lady pianist in the pub , Pam . Karioke move over ! ( We were not officially of age to be there mind you , but most people were well behaved .)
The Coach and Horses in Soho , if you are ever wandering through , has a wonderful couple of mature men playing the piano and spoons ; they issue word sheets and everyone joins in . Priceless good fun .
I wonder if it goes on elsewhere ? Or has " Britain's got Talent " got the nation riveted ?
( I love the Leicestershire country-side , by the way , Graylew .) I miss Burton , but England has great spots all over , especially when the sun shines .

1 May, 2013

Mornin me duck.....Heard of Golden Fleece, but never been there, will have to have a look at it.
Driad...You're right...anywhere the sun is, is great, seeing plenty of it at the moment!
