Tomato updates

Following Darren8’s blog on his tomato progress I thought I’d have yet another go at “beefsteak” type of tomato

I have tried, and failed with them before, but maybe this will be my year?

First an update on the tom seeds sown recently, and you guessed it, the “spares” have all germinated, but not lobbing any yet, I think I can find a home for them

Here are the Yellow Balcony I resowed due to first lot fail, own self saved seed, all germinated this time having chosen the plumpest looking seeds this time round

And here’s all of my seedlings on the window sill, first true leaves just showing

Now back to beefsteaks. Went through my older packets and found my previous purchases and I’ve just sown the following. All old opened seed packets, all grown previously but without a lot of success in achieving larger than average tomatoes

Costoluto Fiorentino bought end of season clearance 2013
Pink Wonder bought end of season clearance 2015
Pink Brandywine 2013
Mortgage Lifter 2013
The latter two were bought after a visit to West Dean tomato show, it all looked so easy there

We are in it together Grandad! lol! My neighbour and friend who is really good with toms, now has his in his greenhouse, so I put mine out too and ramped up the heat. If it works for him.....;) I have never tried the beefsteak ones, but last week I picked up three nice little seedlings of 'Russian Black' in the GC which claims to have 'excellent flavour', so ...we'll see.

Lol😄 Are you getting your sob stories in early re:my poor old seeds boohoo?
I enjoyed the photos though, good job with the aphid bait!
CK, having a 'friend' that's a tom expert with a greenhouse is cheating...
Bollocks, I know it's a bad idea but let the growing commence...

CK, hope you have more luck with beefsteak type than I have so far, from memory I've also failed with Black Russian as well

I think I'll try and be more ruthless, thinning out to just one or two fruits and not letting the plant carry more, bit like apple trees if you think about it I suppose

It's an idea Grandad....lets see how things go. I haven't tried a beefsteak one yet. I think I see them as 'advanced level' tomatoes, same with plum varieties! lol!
