Mottisfont Abbey Hampshire was wonderful

Had the pleasure of visiting Mottisfont Abbey recently. At first it looked like the usual grand house set in attractive open parkland with impressive old plane trees and sweet chestnuts with interesting patterns on the bark of the trunks.
But then my wife and I came to the walled garden and we entered one of the most stunning gardens we have ever seen. A never-ending selection of roses and clematis set in herbaceous borders that were a riot of colour. My pictures probably don’t do it justice. It was just stunning.
I tried to take a picture of the label of some of the plants I photographed and when you do see a label it precedes the photograph of the plant.
They have a Gardener’s Question time at 2pm each day too and I found out that the tall campanulas were Campanula Lactiflora and of course had to go out and buy some for my own garden as soon as i returned home.
It’s definitely a garden to visit when roses are at their best and there were so many more than the few I have shown here.

I love those old walled gardens, I should think this one needs the Walls to keep it in - it's packed isn't it! Don't think I have ever seen so many plants!

Thank you. And Graham Thomas is one of the most reliable and disease free roses. A good choice.

Lovely blog. Must try and get there again before the roses finish. They are beautiful.

Thanks. The Emilia Plater clematis was better than my picture suggests. It glowed. That's the one I would like to get.

We had a few days in Hampshire and visited Mottisfont ( National Trust property) and Hilliers which are both near Romsey and also Furzey Gardens near Minstead, all good in their own way but Mottisfont was the star.
