~ my dad used to have a quite enclosed garden with high hedges and all the birds used to get fed daily by him~ when he was gardening he always threw the worms to a blackbird which used to watch him all the time.
Over the years it became so tame it would go to the kitchen door and wait for food!

Robins seem to appear when you're gardening too and they seem especially tame at the moment, I suppose they are a bit hungry. Not wanting to sound morbid but wonder how long birds life - Where are you BB?? Obviously your Dad's blackbird was around for a few years Arlene.

we did briefly cover photography in floristy college, but it was quite a while ago now, to be honest as long as i can get a decent picture, i am not fussed at all the flassy stuff. i know that you just can't get the detail that you do with what was then called an SLR camera, - is this the same sort of thing that you have? the one i had a college was manual and had a tripod and everything, but not digital. i kinda got lost at 3pix lol. but must say you do take some fantstic pictures Jac, can see that you are really into it, and lets face it gardening an photography go hand in hand - bit like gardening and floristy
: o )

Great blog and photos Jacque. He's a lovely little black bird.

~apparently blackbirds can live for up to 20 years in good conditions~eg food, predators etc but most live between 3/4 years~we have a pair in a very large thick fir in the front garden who have been there for at least a couple of years~of course it is difficult to confidently say they are the same ones!

Thanks Arlene for the info on the life expectancy, pity they dont have name tags!

Definately a 'she'. The 'he' blackbird is black without the markings.......great pics though. Sadly we have had a greatly reduced flock of feathered visitors to our garden since the neighbour chopped down a lovely big tree.....they've got nowhere to hide now from our three cats!

Oh Dawn - enjoy your Robins as they have one of the shortest life spans of any of our birds.Average less than 2 years oldest living ringed 8 years.

Sadly their lifestyle tend to nest quite low in hedges prime target for cats, their aggressive nature and out in all weathers takes it toll.

On a happier note numbers are good cos we re all so fond of them they really would struggle without us.

I have a half barrel pond with plants and a couple of small fish and over the past few days I've noticed that when the bird bath is frozen due to it being shallow,a blackbird has discovered how to stand at the edge of the frozen surface of the pond so that the ice tilts with his weight and he can get a drink !! Sparrows have also sussed out how to do this.

Pond frozen here too, have to keep breaking the ice gently using boiling water, Freddie is still alive and swimming free.... lovely pictures Jacque.

The birds dont seem to go to my pond.... but use my two birdbaths... which i went out and defrosted very day.... at last its warmed up so i wont have to do that again for a while i hope.....I think the Blackbirds get quite tame...especialy in the summer when your out there gardening....must be nice for you Jaque to see the garden from your kitchen...mine faces the road at the front.....but i can sit in the living room and watch the birds from my french windows...Holly..
